'EV YORK, Fob. 22. Reports ' that tho big White Star line steam ship Celtic hail hit a mine February 11 and was towed back into Liver pool In a damaged condition were brought here today by passengers on the American line steamship Phila delphia, also from that port. The Phileadelphla, the passengers said, sailed about thirty minutes lif ter tho Celtic and the Iliitlsb steam ship Canada, a troop ship. Wireless calls from the Celtic asking for aid are said to have been picked up by tho radio operators on the American liner, which, however, did nut re spond as tho Canada was already re ported to . have reached her. Tho Canada, It was said, towed the Celtic 9 hack to Liverpool. Kopoi-t Kept Secret. An effort was made to keepsthe re port secret in fear of alaraming the Philadelphia's passengers, but it leak ed out after the danger 7.one had been passed. The Celtic, it was believed. carried no passengers. Officers of the Philadelphia doclin- " oil to discuss the report today under plea of neutrality restrictions forbid ding tboin to talk. It was' said here by officials of the White Star line that no word had been received of tho acldcnl. The Celtic is a vessel of 20,904 tons and was last report ed as having arrived In Liverpool on an unnamed date alter leaving here January 21.
