Iowa in thu San FrauciHco llullctin of June 1H: "In thu Month gnrdoiiH of thu ex position there is n very pretty foun tain, designed by thu San 1'Yaueineo huulplor, Arthur l'titnaiii, and rc resented in duplicate. People, an (hey paHH iiiluiiro (ho figure of thu meniiaid above thu bowl, I'rcncli in feeling, liiinuonir.iiig with the general character of thu gnnlciiM. With run Hon those of them who know Put nitui'rt work Hay that thin fountain does not represent its "eneral chnr acter. Fur l'utnnin is a Keulptor of oninialH, one of the most rifted in the world, perhaps thu greatest in bin particular kind, with a truth, a sin cerity and a vigor that Iikh caused him to bu compared with Itodiu. In thu palace of fine arts one will find many of those I'utnnm animals, tduglo and in small groups, most of them in miniature, very delicately worked out, with feeling in every one, thu feeling that makes each animal clinruetcritie. It is essentially by feeling that this sensitive aitlst reaches- his effects. Only one who know and loved aiiinmls could repro duce them in this suhtlu way. In a ureal emulation there is dan ger that many i'inu things may be overlooked. Thu expert in sculpture would rrbignfco nt n ciihikiI glance the (cuius lu those little animal fig ures. Most obheners would tonlixv it only after careful observation. Mat thu lover of animals, trained or un trained in mt, would know instantly. 'J'herc they are, the animals thein Kclt'H, almost alive in thu bronxc. Sel dom is u sculptor fortunate enough to hac so la re a iitiiuher of his works put into brour.c, a compliment in itself, a tribute to their worth, nnd a promise of lusting success. Aninne; thu many thius that the imposition is doiutr for us there in oiio that wo all might to bo griituful for hero in Hum Francisco. It is giv U)n us remindeis of thu genius in our midst. Those who appreciate u,tod work in sculpture, liowcwr, do not need to bu icmindrd of Arthur Put nam. They know what hu can do, Meiely to see his "(nc Man" at the Ilohcmlau club is to be made aware of a teiiiarkiililv accurate iuuiKiiiutioii o.iressuiif ilsclt in rarer technical ability. The subject often causes it to be computed with the figure h, Itodiu of the huue cluineiitul man trying to grapple with problem that lumi tornuMiteil hiunauity down tin ages, "The Thinker." Theio is some thing distiiilim and contradictory about the pyuholoxv in Podia's woik. Hut in "The Cao Man" the iiiteiii elation can ins umlaut cuitui tion, thu figuie, thu face and the head, still close to the animal, in fact almost wholly animal, the dawn ot something like iiiiderxtuudiiig luinth peeling out of thu eye. 1 wish that "Thu Cave Man" wijit bu duplicated for the (lohleu (i He Park. Though not hpicnl of tin work that )ut made Putnam widely known, it i luturttttiag and M.uerlul in iUulf, and it shows the ihurc o a gift that has mainly epuscd it self in animal work on a hiiiull stale Arthur Putnam bus arrived mm, in hik own way, by a path that he blared for hiuifcclf.
