WOMttN of lhis pity initfht avcII follow the lend ol their sisters in the East Liberty district of Pitts burg, who have formed an auxiliary to the tiast'Liberh Business Men's Exchange and will work to promote the interests of their community. The members of the aux iliary pledge, themselves to do their personal and house hold shopping in the stores of that locality instead of in the larger ones of Pittsburg proper. Local business conditions would be vastly improved if the women of Med ford would follow a similar course They might organize and carry on a campaign against the purchase of goods outside the city, because there is en tirely too much Medford money going to merchants ii Portland and San Francisco to be absolutely lost to thir community. There is excellent argument against outside buying since the stores here sell .just as cheaply and are far mor responsible to their individual customers than outside mer chants. J he woman who docs Her shopping by man noi only pays exprcssage, which must be added to the cos1 price of her purchases, but she loses the ability to effee' a change in case they do not prove absolutely satisfactory .It is unfair to expect Med lord merchants to carry elal) orate stocks, unless (he people of the community patron i.e them. The way fo make local stores better is to mak all purchases here! That will do more than anything else to increase the size and variety of the stock, for even progressive business man is eager to provide whatevei there is a demand for in his community. And it is also manifestly unfair for people who secure their living in this community to spend their money else where. It is a moral duty aviny resident owes the publi in general to do his share in supporting local institution? and Medford will be vastly better off in every way if sucl a course is generally followed. Local merchants basft then business reputation upon dealing fairly with the public and the public, should in return deal fairly by them. WHY NOT THE BOYS AS WELL? REGISTRATION OF LAND TITLE. Lt does not seem as thougl it should bo within the province of the principal of a higl school to dictate to the students as to the manner'of thei personal appearance, provided time enojigh has been givei to make due presentable; and surely no one can deny, whei they see the fantastic arrangement of hair nowadays, th.v ample time was used. If objection be made to the "rats' and puffs of the young ladies, why not object to tho cut o tho clothes of the young men? One is as artificial as tin other. More padding is' used in the coats of the presen day youth to give them stalwart, athletic, figures with un naturally broad shoulders, out of proportion to any figure than any girl could possibly use in the adornment of he hair. Pattorson, our water an nrlntonilont, thinks there Is plenty f water aud that tho present system s good enough. I ltsoprof mfwyp pj good enough. It is perfectly nnt- ral that he should think so, for he us made the system juts what It Ik tnd I would expect dim to stand back f It. He alone understands how to 'audio the m.vhU'iii in it is nt proaent lo knows the lontitlon of all the ,ntes, sen Ice cockH nnd any other mrt of the syttsni and tho city or shland Is in tho duplnrnblo condl Ion, thnt should Mr. I'attoraou be re uovimI from the. seono of action, u tJior man could auywhoro nonr linn Uh the water systom In lit: present irimltlve condition nud should lie live mil wish the job thu olty of Ashland annul do without hint. Mr. 1'nttur on knows thl to bo a fact, a mat er to be greatly deplored. So why dioiild he not want Uio water system 0 to vis In In Its irogeut deplorable oiulliiou aud declare It good enough? 1 Is natural thxt ho should wish to told lit control of tho astern nnd tave matter uuitlnue In tho same Id rut. Hut all voters hould know hnt our rvater ystem litis boon built iud all extensions nnd Improvements u the system biMMt made with no 'bought or regard to sanitary meth wis, or to regulation or control of the .ireesure, with the reeult that some water users may have a pressure of M0 pounds with faucets and fixture 1 1 ways leaking and wasting water, vhlie other useis get HtUe or no pre ure and in the dry season cannot have water for Irrtgtitloii at all. lot uti put our water system In modern shape as reromiuendntl by a compe tent engineer, that all may hnve ilent of good water, with au equal man, and havo our water system con tinue to be Improved In Its present primitive nnd unsanitary way. Of U'ourso Mr. I'atterson thinks tne water system good enough. I can remember, when In August and September of' 1910, many con sumers of water In our city came to me, pleading with tears In their eyes, for water to keep their gardens nnd berry patches from burning up and wo could not give them relief. Many lost their gardens nnd some could not got water nt times for domestic use. Some hnd tholr water monoy returned and ninny moro deserved It. 4 Had theso water bonds been voted upon In Auguts or Septombor there is no question but whnt they would have carried by n majority of four or five to ono; but thero Is" so much water flowing overywhoro 'now1 that some people forget, while othors fight any kind of public Improvement nt nil times. I bnvo too much faith in the good Judgment nnd spirit of progress with wliicli, tho good and progressive peo ple of Ashlnnd nro filled, to think for a moment thnt tho bonds will not he voted. Hut should it happen thnt they do not enrry, tho voters will -1111 nounco to tho ouosldo world thnt our city Is large enough nnd that wo are not concerned about our future growth and prosperity; for without ndequato Improvement of our water system w6 ennont sorvo 011 tsendy nnd rnpld Increase In population. Ono serious mntter which should bo considered, nnd w.hlch I know to be n fact, Is the great dangor of loc Ing our city by fire In tho dry season. Hnd a ffro gained nny kind of hend- wny In August or September of 1010, there would not hnve boon water to have stayed Its progress and Ashland would hnvo surely been wiped off the map. Unless great Improvement to tho systom is mndo at once, rates for Insurance must greatly Increnso nil ovor our city nnd will nffect the pocketbook of evory proporty owner lu Ashlnnd. Now, voters nnd friends, lot us look nt this mntter In n cool headed, sen sible und serious wny.
