burg, who have formed an auxiliary to the tiast'Liberh
Business Men's Exchange and will work to promote the
interests of their community. The members of the aux
iliary pledge, themselves to do their personal and house
hold shopping in the stores of that locality instead of in
the larger ones of Pittsburg proper.
Local business conditions would be vastly improved if
the women of Med ford would follow a similar course
They might organize and carry on a campaign against the
purchase of goods outside the city, because there is en
tirely too much Medford money going to merchants ii
Portland and San Francisco to be absolutely lost to thir
community.
There is excellent argument against outside buying
since the stores here sell .just as cheaply and are far mor
responsible to their individual customers than outside mer
chants. J he woman who docs Her shopping by man noi
only pays exprcssage, which must be added to the cos1
price of her purchases, but she loses the ability to effee'
a change in case they do not prove absolutely satisfactory
.It is unfair to expect Med lord merchants to carry elal)
orate stocks, unless (he people of the community patron
i.e them. The way fo make local stores better is to mak
all purchases here! That will do more than anything else
to increase the size and variety of the stock, for even
progressive business man is eager to provide whatevei
there is a demand for in his community.
And it is also manifestly unfair for people who secure
their living in this community to spend their money else
where. It is a moral duty aviny resident owes the publi
in general to do his share in supporting local institution?
and Medford will be vastly better off in every way if sucl
a course is generally followed. Local merchants basft then
