COMMMUNITY WEDNESDAY, JUNE 14, 2017 HERMISTONHERALD.COM • A7 NEWS IN BRIEF Brown reinstates Governor’s Arts Awards Governor Kate Brown, in partnership with the Oregon Arts Commission, has reinstated the Governor’s Arts Awards. After a 10-year hiatus, the event’s revival honors the Arts Commission’s 50 years of service to Oregon’s arts community. “Art is a fundamental ingre- dient of any thriving and vibrant community,” Brown said. “Art sparks connections between peo- ple, movements, and new ideas. To put it simply, art makes life better.” The Governor’s Arts Awards recognizes individuals, organi- zations, and arts supporters who have made significant contribu- tions to the arts in Oregon. The awards are open to any individ- ual, organization, or community that currently resides in or has a significant presence in Oregon and has made outstanding con- tributions to the arts in the state. Past Governor’s Arts Awards recipients are not eligible. Nom- inations must be submitted by Friday, June 30 at www.orego- nartscommission.org. Recipients will be notified Friday, July 28. Award recipients will be honored in a ceremony at Friday, Oct. 6 at 8 a.m. at the Portland Hilton Downtown. Ave., and online at www.hermis- tonlibrary.us. Hermiston library builds up reading program The Hermiston Church of the Nazarene is hosing a free 5-night program for all kids in the com- munity. The Mega Sports Camp is for youths entering third through fifth grades. It features training in baseball, soccer, unicycling and chess. Participants will engage in team training and games in the sport of their choice. All equip- ment is provided, but participants can bring their own. The Maker Fun Factory vaca- tion Bible school is for preschool aged kids through incoming sec- ond graders. It features age-ap- Children, teens and adults can participate in a Summer Reading Program at the Hermiston Public Library. All three programs will have projects and activities based on “Build a Better World.” The theme encourages readers to take a closer look at their home, their community and the planet. Children birth through fifth grade and teens can sign up June 19-20 at the library, 235 E. Gladys Nazarene church announces youth programs propriate activities, including games, crafts, songs, story time, Biblical teaching and more. Both programs are June 25-29 form 6-8:30 p.m. at the church, 1520 W. Orchard Ave., Hermis- ton. Volunteers can also register on the church’s website. Area libraries offer new online services A vast digital archive of re- search databases, reference books and more can now be accessed by local library patrons. According to the Umatilla County Special Library District, all the county’s public libraries have access to the Gale Resourc- es online, provided through the Statewide Database Licensing Program. The service helps ex- pand resources available through local libraries. Gale Resources includes Gen- eral Topics, Students (Elementary through College), Business Re- sources, Health Resources, and Special Topics. In addition, some of the resources are available in Spanish. S.O.S. group seeks senior input An advocacy and support group for seniors is looking to meet in Hermiston. S.O.S.
