Heppner (1-0) scored 14 points in the second half to overcome a 12-8 half- time deicit. The defense recovered two fumbles in the third quarter and Kevin Murray led the unit with 15 tackles. Smith inished 8-for-19 passing for 94 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in his irst start, and Coby Daugherty added 94 total yards on 13 carries and a pair of catch- es. Heppner plays its home opener next Friday against Grant Union at 7 p.m. ——— HHS (1-0) St.P (0-1) 8 6 0 6 6 0 8 — 22 6 — 18 UMATILLA 23, UNION 13, OT — At Umatilla, Trent Durfey busted into the end zone on a one-yard run in overtime, and the Umatilla defense stuffed Union on a fourth-down run to secure victory in their irst game under head coach Dan Durfey. Union tied the score at 13-13 in the fourth quarter on a 10-yard touchdown run by Cole Baxter, his sec- ond of the game. Trent Durfey led Umatil- la (1-0) with 119 yards on 19 carries and also scored on a 10-yard run in the sec- ond quarter. Leonel Corona kicked the point after for a 7-6 lead. Umatilla will host Pilot Rock next Friday at 7 p.m. ——— Union (0-1) 7 0 0 6 0 — 13 UHS (1-0) 7 6 0 8 — 21 0 AMITY 26, IRRIGON 13 — At The Dalles, Irri- gon’s youth showed in its irst game in Class 3A, but the Knights still had chanc- es to sway the game in their favor said coach Steve Sheller. “We made too many mistakes and they made less,” he said. “It was a good game, Amity just made a few more plays.” Irrigon’s next game is Friday at Enterprise at 7 p.m. ——— IHS AHS 0 8 0 6 13 6 0 — 13 6 — 26 SILETZ FALLEY 42, ECHO 28 — The Echo Cou- gars opened the 2016 season with a tough 42-28 loss to Siletz Valley on Saturday af- ternoon at the Dufur Classic. Junior running back Zach Gehrke did have a big day in the loss, running for 129 yards and three touch- downs on just nine carries for the Cougars (0-1), while sophomore quarterback Devan Craig completed 3-5 passes for 47 yards and a touchdown and also ran for 61 yards on 17 carries. Junior receiver Ty Mulder also got in on the action, catching two passes for 41 yards and a touchdown, while also gathering an in- terception on defense. ——— EHS (0-1) SV (1-0) 6 0 0 22 — 28 14 6 16 6 — 42 TRIAD 42, IONE 14 — At Dufur, Triad’s speed was a killer for the Cardinals in their season opener at the Dufur Classic on Saturday. “They were fast, total team speed they were fast- er than us,” said irst-year Ione coach Todd Knop. “They basically outran us. They didn’t overpower us at all, they ran around us. “They ran some wacky formations to utilize their speed, and we got caught a couple of times by those plays.” Knop said if it weren’t for the big plays, Ione’s de- fense was solid. The Cardinals (0-1) will try again for win No. 1 on Friday when they travel to Echo for a 7 p.m. start. ——— THS (1-0) IHS (0-1) 14 0 8 0 14 8 6 — 42 6 — 14 VOLLEYBALL HERMISTON 2, THE DALLES 1 — At Bend, the Hermiston Bulldogs went 2-0 in their irst matches of the season to win the bronze bracket at the Mountain View Tournament, placing them ninth overall. The Bulldogs beat The Dalles 19-25, 25-15, 15-12, and then beat Redmond 25- 19, 25-13. Hayden Meyers led them with 14 kills on the day, and Regan Meyers added 12 more. Clarissa Nitz served a team-high four aces, and also led them with 24 as- sists. Hermiston hosts La Grande for its home opener on Tuesday at 7 p.m. ECHO WINS TOUR- NAMENT — At Board- man, Echo won the Riv- erside Tournament for the second year in a row by beating Helix 25-15, 25-13 in the championship. It was a rematch from pool play, where Helix had gotten the better of Echo in two 20-point games. Echo went 3-0 in bracket play with wins over Elgin 25-21, 25-16, and Umatilla 27-25, 25-16. Cougars coach Janice Scott did not have any sta- tistics available, but said the hitting of Hannah McCarty and Marti Huff, along with strong team serving and de- fense carried the day. BOYS SOCCER HERMISTON 2, LA GRANDE 1 — At La Grande, the Hermiston Bulldogs (3-0) kept their hot start to the 2016 season going with a victory over La Grande on Saturday, outscoring opponents 9-2 in their three wins. The Bull- dogs will look to make it four straight when they host Century today at 4 p.m. RIVERSIDE 8, UMA- TILLA 0 — At Umatilla, the Riverside Pirates (1- 1, 1-0) earned their irst win of the season in a big way, shutting out EOL ri- val Umatilla (0-2, 0-1) on Saturday afternoon.
