WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2016 BULLDOGS: ing moments for the Bull- dog defense came late in the second quarter, trailing 13-7 with 1:46 left in the half. The Bulldogs had forced the Ti- tans into a 3rd and 23 situation from its own 20 yard line when the Titans ran a simple draw play with running back Elijah Jones who broke a few Bull- dog tacklers and scampered 41 yards to the Bulldog 39. The play eventually led to a Union touchdown that gave the Titans a 20-7 lead at the half. Union racked up 335 yards of total offense against Hermiston, with quarter- back Victor completing 12- 18 passes for 114 yards and a touchdown while Siofele ran for 83 yards on eight car- ries with two touchdowns. Hermiston next plays at Lewiston (ID) on Friday at 7 p.m. continued from Page A7 vantage of several Herm- iston mistakes, including a pair of interceptions by James, one of which was re- turned 85 yards for a touch- down by Union’s Lincoln Victor to give the Titans a 13-7 lead in the second quar- ter. Hermiston’s defense struggled to contain the Titans offensive weapons over the middle quarters, as numer- ous missed tackles and blown coverages led to several Titan big plays and touchdowns. Ena said that it was overall a frustrating game for the Bull- dog D. (Union) just kept running it and we were struggling on tackling,” he said. “We weren’t reading as fast as we needed to and we were just losing intensity.” One of the backbreak- HERMISTONHERALD.COM • A9 SPORTS Friday’s game at Lewiston down two starters as senior H-back Jerry Ramirez and junior left tackle A.J. Fernandez was also sent off in the fourth quarter for throwing a punch. ——— UHS HHS 6 14 7 0 9 0 7 — 36 20 — 27 Scoring Plays 8:30 1Q — UHS Siofele 7-yard run. Playing the underdog role last season, the Tigers made it all the way to the 2A semiinals before losing to Kennedy 34-20. The hype has been building around this team ever since. Now they’re intent on proving 2015 wasn’t a luke. “Last year we kind of came out of nowhere,” Salas said. “This year no one is go- ing to hand us anything. I told my kids in the locker room, ‘Nobody fears Stanield foot- ball and that’s gotta change.’ When we come out here we have to punish teams and send a message.” Justin Keeney responded to Salas’ message. The junior lined up at linebacker, cor- nerback and rover, spelling Monkus when he needed a breather. Besides lying to the ball with timely tackling, Keeney picked off Olsen in the third quarter, quickly halting an Enterprise drive. “You can put him any- where, he’s such a smart kid,” Salas said. “… He’s just a football junkie. He loves foot- ball, he loves to learn, and like I said, put him anywhere and he’ll give you 100 percent.” Stanield’s offensive gameplan was altered as a result of senior quarter- back Dylan Grogan missing the game with a hip point- er, which he suffered in the team’s blue-and-gold scrim- mage a week earlier. Junior Shayne Keltz started in his place, mostly playing a facil- itator role. Besides a couple quarter- back keepers up the middle of the defense, Keltz had his choice of Tigers running backs to lean on. Monkus led the team with 192 rushing yards and two touchdowns, but was also complemented by Adrian Renner’s 143 yards on 11 rushes and Keeney’s 54 yards. “They played awesome,” senior offensive guard Jose Garcia said. “Thyler ran hard. Adrian, who stepped up and came out this year, ran hard too … All the running backs did a great job today.” Keltz didn’t attempt a pass until the third quarter when he hit Justin Shelby for 11 yards on fourth down. “When you have a senior group and a new, raw quarter- back you want to just let him ease into it a little bit,” Salas said. Salas expects Grogan to return for next week’s non-conference home game against Cascade. “He’ll be back next week and he’ll be at full strength,” Salas said. “Hopefully we’ll keep getting better from here on out.” ——— Stanield 54, Enterprise 22 STANFIELD (1-0) 28 7 12 7 – 54 ENTERPRISE (0-1) 0 6 8 8 – 22 First Quarter Stanield – Blankenship ive-yard run (Extra Point No Good) Stanield – Monkus 66-yard run (Two-Point Conversion Good) Stanield – Monkus six-yard run (Extra Point No Good) Stanield – Renner four-yard run (Two- Point Conversion Good) Second Quarter Stanield – Keeney three-yard run (Extra Point Good) Enterprise – Trent Bales three-yard run (Extra Point No Good) Third Quarter Stanield – Blankenship two-yard run (Extra Point No Good) Enterprise – Kobe Ketscher 15-yard pass from Olsen (Two-Point Conversion Good) Fourth Quarter Stanield – Jose Galarza two-yard run (Extra Point Good) Enterprise – Trent Bales two-yard pass from Olsen (Two-Point Conversion Good) Statistics RUSHING – T.
