A T W H ITE HEAT (Co-op League News Service) Chicago, 111.— T hree hundred del egates and members of cooperatives in th e Chicago area m eeting in W au kegan, May 1 and 2, for the 11th A nnual Congress of the Central S tate s Cooperative League, found the in te re st in th e cooperative move m ent a t "w h ite h e a t” . The dele g a te s represented 60 cooperative as sociations as contrasted w ith 38 m em ber co-ops in 1936 and 13 when th e L eague was organized in 1927. M ethods of cooperative education an d organ izatio n and im m ediate pro blem s of d istrib u tio n were major considerations of the congress. A special commission was appointed to stu d y th e rela tio n of th e League to cooperative federations which have been form ed to carry on intensive educatio n al w ork in sm aller areas w ith in the te rrito ry of the League. T he C ooperative W holesale, orga nized by the League a year ago, re ported a t its first an n u al m eeting th e follow ing day th a t 43 retail co op erativ es have affiliated w ith it. D uring its year of operation the bus iness of th e w holesale has grown so la rg e th a t It was necessary to open a new w arehouse. A lthough still in its org an izatio n al stage, the whole sale showed a net saving of 2.6 per ce n t for the year. S ta rtin g w ith 32 item s, the co-op has extended its op e ra tio n s and now handles 264 com m odities, m any of them under the Co-op label. T he delegates to th e wholesale voted th a t the organization use such agencies as th e U.S. Bureau of S tan d ard s and Consumers Union for g rad in g and obtain in g speciaflca- tio n s on m erchandise which it h and les.
