(Co-op League News Service)
Chicago, 111.— T hree hundred del
egates and members of cooperatives
in th e Chicago area m eeting in W au
kegan, May 1 and 2, for the 11th
A nnual Congress of the Central
S tate s Cooperative League, found the
in te re st in th e cooperative move
m ent a t "w h ite h e a t” . The dele
g a te s represented 60 cooperative as
sociations as contrasted
w ith 38
m em ber co-ops in 1936 and 13 when
th e L eague was organized in 1927.
M ethods of cooperative education
an d organ izatio n and im m ediate pro
blem s of d istrib u tio n were major
considerations of the congress. A
special commission was appointed to
stu d y th e rela tio n of th e League to
cooperative federations which have
been form ed to carry on intensive
educatio n al w ork in sm aller areas
w ith in the te rrito ry of the League.
T he C ooperative W holesale, orga
nized by the League a year ago, re
ported a t its first an n u al m eeting
th e follow ing day th a t 43 retail co
op erativ es have affiliated w ith it.
D uring its year of operation the bus
iness of th e w holesale has grown so
la rg e th a t It was necessary to open
a new w arehouse. A lthough still in
its org an izatio n al stage, the whole
sale showed a net saving of 2.6 per
ce n t for the year. S ta rtin g w ith 32
item s, the co-op has extended its op
e ra tio n s and now handles 264 com
m odities, m any of them under the
Co-op label.
T he delegates to th e wholesale
voted th a t the organization use such
agencies as th e U.S. Bureau of S tan
d ard s and Consumers Union for
g rad in g and obtain in g speciaflca-
tio n s on m erchandise which it h and
