HERMISTON FAIR HOW SEPTEMBER 2-3-4 $200 ADDED TO PREM IUM MONEY T he U m atilla P roject fa ir datee w ere advanced to Septem ber 2-3-4 by the fa ir board a t a m eeting held F rid a y n ig h t of la st week, because of a co n flict w ith th e H eppner ro deo dates. T he o rig in al d a te s were for A ugust 26-27-28. Im p o rtan t ch anges w ere made in th e prem ium lis t and $200 added to th e prem ium lis t money, over th a t of la st year. F avorable action was taken by th e board on th e erection of a tem p o rary b u ild in g in w hich com mer- cia lex h ib its w ill be a rran g e d by com panies h an d lin g autom obiles, cream sep arato rs, refrig erato rs, r a dios, farm m achinery, w ashing m a chines ind o th e r equipm ent, to aid in fu rn ish in g revenue fo r the pre m ium lis t and add in te re st to the f a ir exhibits. N. R. M ueller is super in te n d e n t for th is division. The board recom m ended con s tru c tio n of an oval-shaped arena, 50x80 feet, to be used as a judging a re n a , w hich w ill be placed betw een th e race tra c k and th e d airy barns a t th e w est end of th e grounds. H . A. Pankow was given th e a u th o rity to engage a la rg e carnival com pany to fu rn ish p a rt of th e en te rta in m e n t for fa ir visitors. Premium List Arranged. S u p erin te n d en ts of th e various divisions had previously w orked out proposed changes in th e prem ium lis t w ith A ssistan t C ounty A gent J a y T. P ierson and these w ere pre sen ted and accepted by th e board. A m ong these was a fund of $16 for th e school ex h ib its to be d istrib u ted according to th e best ju d g m e n t of th e person Judging. A com m ittee re p rese n tin g the W estern B ranch of th e A m erican D airy Science association, who rep rese n ts th e dairy in te re st in the n o rth w est, m ade a study of all the d iffe re n t county and s ta te fair p re m ium lists w ith the idea of w orking o u t a uniform classification for all d a iry shows. A fter w orking over all prem ium lists the com m ittee recom m ended th a t all shows, in so fa r as money w as available, change from a th re e and four money show to a six an d eig h t money show. T hey recom mended th a t four, six, and eight prizes be aw arded in a six money show instead of six prizes in each class. The reason for th is change was to p erm it a la rg e r d istrib u tio n of prizes offered in younger classes, w hich, it w as felt, would encourage th e selection of b e tte r show anim als am ong the younger groups. T hrough th is m ethod of enco u rag in g the younger classes a b e tte r Imature class w ill develop for la te r show ing. and w ill encourage im provem ent of types. R ecom m endations w ere also made and accepted th a t ex tra prem ium s be aw arded for production records in older fem ale classes, and th e local fa ir board increased th e prem ium s 10 percent on all an im als w ith rec ords of production. T hese records can e ith e r be D.H.I.A. (stan d a rd p la n ) o r advanced reg istry , w hich a re official records recognized by th e various breeders associations.
