U M A TILLA TRAGEDY SCHOOL ELECTIONS TAKES FOUR LIVES JUNE 21 AND 28 T he lives of four out of a family of five w ere snuffed out quickly and tra g ic a lly S aturday afternoon about 3 :0 0 o’clock when the car in which Mr. and Mrs. H enry Dexter and d a u g h te r K athleen and son Jimmy w ere riding, sw erved from the high w ay over a 40-foot em bankm ent n ear U m atilla, burn in g them fa ta l ly. T he fam ily had been In Pendleton and H erm iston and was retu rn in g to th e ir home when the accident oc cu rred approxim ately one mile east of U m atilla. Cause of the accident was the p u n ctu re of a fro n t tire. According to eye w itnesses the car skidded some 25 feet before it w ent over the em bankm ent and tu rn ed over, lodg ing betw een two willow trees. W it nesses said th e car was on fire be fore it left the highw ay. Two cans of gasoline and kero sene in th e car added to the in ten si ty of th e fire and it was impossible for persons to get w ithin 25 yards of th e b u rn in g car. W illiam C. C utting, proprietor of a service sta tio n n ear the scene of the accident, and Gene Dexter, bro th e r of H enry Dexter, were among th e first people at the scene of the accident. Both were helpless to aid th e four victim s who were burned beyond recognition. Evelyn, th e only other member of th e fam ily, was w orking a t the A. E. M cFarland ranch near U m atilla a t th e tim e of the accident. F u n eral services were held Mon day afternoon from the Methodist church w ith the P ra n n funeral par lors in charge. Rev. R. R. Finkbei- ner read the final rites and friends and relatives stood w ith bowed heads as the caskets were lowered into th e graves a t the H erm iston cemetery. Among survivors are Mr. D exter’s m other of U m atilla. Gene Dexter and B ert Dexter of U m atilla, Charles D exter, Monroe Dexter and A rth u r D exter, all in California, all b ro th ers; Naomi D exter of C alifornia and Mrs. Leola C arroll of U m atilla, both sisters. Mrs. D exter is survived by tw o sisters who live in Freew ater.
