Bone deposits unearthed In a gravel pit on a ranch a t Irvington, near Oak land, a few days ago belonged to a prehistoric horse, it has been i terinlned by Dr. Chester H. Stock of the department of paleontology at the university. The bones, about a dozen In all, suggested an equine mastodnnte in size, hnt yet bearing unmistakable resemblance to a horse. Prof. George D. Louderbaek, geolo gist, expressed the opinion that at the time the animal was Imbedded there were no hills around Irvington and no San Francisco bay and that the region hereabout was n vast plain. The gravel snxgeatn that the horaes or horse mastodons may have been swept down from the high lands and de stroyed In some tremendous prehis toric flood.
