Bone deposits unearthed In a gravel
pit on a ranch a t Irvington, near Oak­
land, a few days ago belonged to a
prehistoric horse, it has been i
terinlned by Dr. Chester H. Stock of
the department of paleontology at
the university.
The bones, about a
dozen In all, suggested an equine
mastodnnte in size, hnt yet bearing
unmistakable resemblance to a horse.
Prof. George D. Louderbaek, geolo­
gist, expressed the opinion that at the
time the animal was Imbedded there
were no hills around Irvington and no
San Francisco bay and that the region
hereabout was n vast plain.
The

down from the high lands and de­
stroyed In some tremendous prehis­
toric flood.
