GKEhUAM PAGE FOUR Rockwood Grange Has Successful Fair (By Mr». T hom as M illar) T he Rockwood g range fair was held S atu rd ay afternoon and eve ning at the Rockwood hall on the Base L ine road. D uring the a f te r noon p rogram G overnor P atte rso n was the m ain speaker a t which tim e he told some facts regarding tw o of the sta te institu tio n s, the p en iten tiary and the sta te train in g school a t W oodburn. Among other things he m entioned th e flax in du stry at th e p en iten tiary and its grow th. The sta te has co n tracted for 4500 acres of flax to be grow n d urin g 1929, m aking an in crease of 1500 ac res over 1828, w hile th e in crease of 1928 was 1000 ac res over th a t of 1927. F arm ers c o n tra c t to grow the flax for the state. Gov e rn o r P atte rso n asserte d th a t the per cap ita cost of keeping p riso n ers has be on reduced $3 per m onth m aking a saving of about $25,000 per year, based on th e p resen t num ber of inm ates. R egarding the train in g school he stated th a t the consolidation of th e old school at Salem w ith th e new one at Wood burn m eans a saving of $50,000 d uring th e biennium . The g rab bag in ch arg e of Mrs. P eter W eiland proved popular. Mrs F a rra n d w as in ch arg e of the guessing contest. T he ladies of the home econom ics com m ittee of the g ran g e served su p p er from 5:30 to 7:30, about 150 persons being served. D uring th e evening Miss A ugusta H ahn of G resham gave w histling solos. All a rticle s re m aining unsold w ere’ auctioned off during th e evening, w ith Clay S.
