Q. S c h n e id e r, th e a u th o r .) An em inent eastern au th o rity tells us th a t the Pacific coast, from ■ C alifornia to n o rth ern W ashington. | will, w ithin th e next 50 years, be the scene of one of th e g re a te st | developm ents ever recorded. Due I to its geographical location, its ready accessibility to w orld m a r kets both by w ater and rail tr a n s p ortation, and because of ciim atic l o n d il t o n s it is o n ly r e a s o n a b l e to expect th a t here, in w hat is know n as the Pacific coast area, will some day be one of the densest ce n te rs of population to be found any- j where. In th is are a a re th re e m ajor , ports — San F rancisco, P o rtlan d I and S eattle. Of these th ree only lone, P o rtlan d , has a fresh w ater h arb o r; th is alone is a d istin ct ad vantage. But when we consider its tem p erate clim ate and its location w ith referen ce to th e other ports it is not difficult to visualize the d istric t in the vicinity of P o rtlan d as tlie hub from w hich may be ex pected to rad iate an alm ost u n precedented grow th and expansion. We of G resham are n atu rally m ost in te reste d in th e developm ent th a t can be expected in the com ing years in our im m ediate vicinity. It may be of Interest to know th a t M ultnom ah county is alm o st the sam e size and shape as th e Canal zone and th a t of its to tal area about 140,000 acres can be c u lti vated. T he county can be divided, roughly, Into three divisions—the east o n e-th ird which is m o u n tain ous; th e w estern one-third which is hilly and contains th e city of P o rtlan d ; and the ce n tral one- th ird w hich is relatively level, con ♦ C h arter No. 257 PAGE THREE ta in s th e best farm land of the county. G resham , located as it is uear the cen ter of th is d istric t is in a position to tak e advantage of th e rapid grow th th a t we can co n fidently look fo rw ard to. W ith th e engineering ability th at is available today it would be folly to say th a t riv ers and h ills offer in su rm o u n tab le b a rrie rs to land tran sp o rta tio n , n evertheless we avoid such o bstacles w herever pos sible. G resham , located as it is w ith a m ountainous d istric t to the east, ro llin g cou n try and the C lackam as riv er to the south and the h ills of w est P o rtlan d to th e w est—even though the proposed T u alatin v al ley tunnel is eventually co n stru c t ed— w ith ra il and w ater tra n sp o rta tion to the n o rth, and at th e th re s hold of a g reat and grow ing city, has m any advantages on w hich we should capitalize. H ere a re grown th e finest b erries and we offer no apology to th e city of W oodburn in sp ite of the claim th a t it is 'T he W orld's B erry C enter'. We are producing a finer q u ality of w al n u ts th an our m uch advertised neighbor, C alifornia, to th e south, an d no doubt w ill continue to excel in oth er lines of h o rtic u ltu re and ag ricu ltu re, in addition to rail and w ater tran sp o rta tio n , five paved highw ays rad iate from P o rtlan d th ro u g h th e m ajor portion of the d istric t trib u ta ry to o u r city. We have here a people who are good exam ples of the av erag e Am erican citizen, a people who are alert, p rogressive and to leran t, w ho vote as they please and bow to th e w ill of th e m ajority. Witli th is so rt of a background th e question th a t n atu ra lly p re sen ts itself is: W hat does th e fu tu re offer G resham and th e a d ja cen t te rrito ry ? Our main a rte ria l highw ays will be widened to accom m odate the ever increasin g num ber of slow moving freight tru ck s in o rd er th a t th e present roads co n stru cted o rig inally for lig h ter passenger traffic can be used en tirely for th a t p u r Report of Condition of pose, th u s m inim izing accidents and speeding up traffic. Some w here in th e d istric t betw een 82d stre e t and G resham will be located a landing field of sufficient size to accom m odate th e ex p ress and freig h t planes of the n ear fu tu re—a field w hich in a re a will dw arf the landing field a t p resen t in use in P o rtiaud, w hile in its vicinity and ad jacen t to th e tran sc o n tin e n ta l ra il lines on th e n o rth and w ater tra n sp o rta tio n on th e Columbia will be developed an im m ense m an u factu rin g d istrict. It is quite possible also th a t the south bank of th e Columbia from the Sandy to th e W illam ette w ill be dyked, w ith a w ide boulevard trav e rsin g th e top as a fu rth e r aid to solving the tr a f fic problem s of th e fu tu re. We m ust adm it th a t it is a m a t te r of only a few years until G resham and all the te rrito ry w est to th e p rese n t city lim its of P o rt land w ill be a p a rt of P o rtlan d but we can and should develop a com m unity here th a t w ill reflect the sterlin g c h a racter of its citizens long afte r the boundary lines of our m unicipality have been oblit erated by the inevitable expansion of our neighboring city on th e west.
