Dont Forget the Dates, the Time and Place Are Out o f D ate The first cleaning of clo th in g by a wet o r w ashing m ethod was done in th e ru n n in g w ater of a river. T he women of prim itive peo ples carried th e ir soiled g arm en ts to th e edge of a strea m , and e ith e r held or fasten ed them down w ith a rock, w hile they allow ed the action of th e w ater to wash o u t th e d irt. T hen th e women g ra d u ally discovered th a t laying th e clo th in g on a sm ooth stone, and pounding w ith an o th e r rock o r flat stick seem ed to rem ove th e d irt m ore easily. The next step was to build o ut into th e riv er a sloping, narrow p latfo rm , and rub th e wash on th is wooden surface. Soon th ey m ade grooves o r ridges in th ese platfo rm s, and th u s was evolved th e m odern p o p u lar “w ash b o ard ” — w hich today is as m uch of a discarded a n tiq u e as tallow dips and w arm ing pans! All of th ese early an d tra d itio n a l m ethods w ere based on th e idea of friction, e ith e r by ru b b in g th e pieces on a board o r pounding them with some form of paddle. T his rub-a-dub-dub m ethod p er sisted for cen tu ries, not because it was th e best way to rem ove soil from clothing, b ut because no one, u n til recen t tim es, stu died to find some new and m ore efficient w ashing principles. J u s t as for th o u san d s of years people cooked th e ir food by hom ing it on a stick over a bed of h ot coals, because m ore advanced m ethods of using an iron ran g e or an electric g rill had not been dis covered. so too, women everyw here have follow ed th e old d ru d g ery w ash b o ard -frictio n h ab it of w ashing because th e w onderful, labor- saving m ethods of m achine w ashing w ere not yet perfected.
