Dole, of Florence, Ore-1 gon. was sentenced to four m onths In th e M ultnom ah county Jail by the F ed eral court here on July 11, for j w ilfully settin g out fires In th e for-i est In 1920, T his case has a ttra c te d a g reat j deal of atten tio n both on account o f 1 th e unusual conditions of th e case ns well as th e unusual c h a racter of th e defendant On May 17, 1921, a fed eral ju ry sittin g nt P ortland, brought ll) a verdict of guilty again st Dole for m aliciously se ttin g a lire w ithin th e Sluslaw N ational F o rest on May 16, 1920. A ccording to sta te m en ts of forest officers. Dole had long been suspected of se ttin g forest fires and efforts had been m ade yenr afte r y ear to secure evidence against him but w ithout success. F rom the sta tn ie n t of w itnesses, Dole’s m ethod of w ork was original and only an unusual com bination of circum stances brought about his con viction. It seem s th a t by long prac tice he could flip a burning m atch into brush nlong a mail o r trail, oven front horseback. Fortgsi of ficers say th a t be tried this once too often, fo r -o n May 16, 1920, as brought o u t tn th e evidence, one of th e w itnesses was th a t day trying out a new telescope by causally watching th ro u g h th e glass occasional passer»- by on a road som e few hundred yards distan t, and happened to see Dole deliberately s trik e m atches and flip them w hile still burn in g Into th e dry ferns and brush along the roadside.
