T he season was such th a t qne h alf of th e field got aw ay from th e w ork ers la st y ear and th e w eeds grew so high th a t they had to be plowed and it was la te in Ju ly w hen -this was done. These plan ts are very th rifty an d have vigorous young canes of th is y ea r’s grow th. T he o th e r sec- tio n of th e field w hlch w'as not plowed la te is of a poorer color and th e new grow th is not so hardy. Mr. Spath has one of th e finest fields in th e sta te . H is m ain field is eig h t years’ old and those who have know n th e field fo r fo m e tim e say th a t th ree years ago th e soil w as life less and th e field in a r a th e r poor s ta te because th e vital elem ents In th e soil had been depleted to such an extent th a t th e plants could not o b tain n ourishm ent from th e ground T he first y e a r Mr. S path plowed u n d e r a crop of vetch and p u t on 250 pounds of n itra te of soda. L a te r he added potash fo r its h ard e n in g q ualities and added m ore of th e o th e r form s of fertilizers and an abundance of straw . T his year he has used th re e tons of straw and 100 pounds of n itra te of soda, 100 pounds of potash and 500 pounds of su p e r p h o sp h ate to th e acre. Next y ear he expects to in crease th e n itr a te of soda To 200 pounds and add th e sam e am o u n ts of o th e r fertilizers. H e will use all th e straw he can g e t if he can get it into th e ground. Mr. S path w as un ab le to g e t b a rn yard m an u re so has to depend upon com m ercial fertilizers.
