"W e are now paying prosperity's deb t," Is the way th e Business Di gest, organ of th e United 8 tates N ational bank of P ortland, explain the present financial situation. It fu rth e r says, It was hum an na tu re to run up bills du rin g good tim es, and we did It. Now we are paying o u r bills under prtstsure. We borrow ed fifty-two cent dollars, so to speak,— now we are repaying them with eighty-five cent dollars, and as prices continue to come down, it will be necessary to repay additional dob lars obtained in boom tim es, with d lllars which will be twice as hard to earn. Of course It is hard, and the worst Is not over. Though prices have fallen g reatly , th e re Is still fu rth e r deflation to be accom plished We are paying th e penalty for violat ing economic laws, and all are guilty from th e F ederal governm ent down. E xtravagance, perhaps Justifiable u n d er th e necessity of w inning th e war, was th e o rd er of th e day. F or several years, figuratively speaking, we were borrow ing ourselves rich. Now we suffer because we m ust pay back B ut o u r people are looking facts In th e face. T he country is not broke it is m erely bent. Common sense and hard w ork— honest w ork— th rift and economy will pull us out of th e hole. It is tim e to ta k e off ou r coats, go to w ork, ta k e o u r m edicine no m a tte r how bitter, suffer our loss es and benefit from o u r experience. T here have been tim es before when financial conditions seem ed alm ost hopeless, but alw ays common sense has prevailed, and th u s It w in be again A slow but steady Im provem ent in the business situation Is tak in g place m onth by m onth. F ear of a finan cial collapse has entirely vanished has given way to a feellffg of quiet confidence th a t o u r industries, taken as a whole, are grad u ally betterin g th e ir condition The existing credit strain is gradually relaxing, general- ly «peaking Hanks the country over have reduced th e ir borrow ings from th e F ederal Reserve Bank to reason able am ounts, and w ithin an o th er ninety days, a fte r the present large crops of the country Imve gone to m arket, th e re will be still fu rth e r liquidation of credits. W hile It Is tru e th a t deflation Is fur from Its end, ami th a t we cannot expect free and active business until the values of various com m odities are n ea rer a parity, yet we m ust realise th a t prices a re gradually reaching som ew here n ear pre-w ar norm al.
