th e Sluslaw N ational F o rest on May
16, 1920. A ccording to sta te m en ts
of forest officers. Dole had long
been suspected of se ttin g forest fires
and efforts had been m ade yenr afte r
y ear to secure evidence against him
but w ithout success.

Dole’s m ethod of w ork was original
and only an unusual com bination of
circum stances brought about his con
viction. It seem s th a t by long prac
tice he could flip a burning m atch
