T he U nited S tate is a t w ar with G erm any a t la st— or so n ea r it th a t only a clash of arm s is needed to m ake it real. T he d estru ctio n of th ree A m erican vessels on Sunday precipitated th e action th a t m akes ours one of th e h elig eren t nations and places us in line as one of the en ten te allies lighting ag a in st the ce n tral pow ers for rig h t and justice and ag a in st the u n w arran ted ag gresslon and interferen ce of a mad em peror who ranks him self with the A lm ighty as the su p rem e rule of th e universe. Much as we o r anyone can reg ret th e tu rn events have ta k e n — events th a t have throw n us into the tu r moil th e re can now he but one end ing. T h at ending will be the over throw of G erm any. Hut G erm any h a j brought it upon herself and m ust suffer the consequence. T he United States Is no longer n eu tral. F or th a t m a tte r the n a jo rity of o u r people have never been n eu trals. They have beeu pro-Eng lislt but have m aintained an ott forced silence in the hope th a t there would be no o u tb reak w hich would involve this country. T hat hope has vanished. U te change th a t has m ade Russia a republic is also p o rteu tio u s of the dow nfall of G erm any. T he reasons are not far to seek, because of the fact th a t th e sym pathies of a people who have deposed an em peror are w ith the English. And the h a lf-h e a rt ed czur, who favored G erm any per sonally w hile his arm ies w ere fight ing w ith th e allies, is now shorn of his pow er to give assistance to the G erm ans. T h ere seents to be but one outcom e of the whole business— the allies will soon be triu m p h u n t, and it is even predicted th a t G erm any will become n republic, also, when th e w ar Is ended.
