Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, April 20, 2022 -- SEVEN Heppner track team starts season strong Fiddlers to perform at Irrigon By Hannah Finch The Mustangs kicked off their track season April 1 in Milton Freewater, where they competed against near- ly 30 other teams. With some events having as many as 40-70 competi- tors, several of Heppner’s athletes placed in the top 10 if not the top 5. This meet would serve as a fresh sea- son opener to start them off for the next several weeks of competition. During the next two meets, one being John Day and another in Umatilla, many of the Mustang ath- letes would break their personal records and then break them again. Joseph Sherman started the meet off in John Day for the Mustangs with a win in the 1500, finishing in 4:41.55 and breaking his previous record by more than 10 seconds. Sherman also placed fourth in the 800m, followed by Ed Ells- worth in seventh. Ellsworth also competed in the 300m hurdles, placing second overall with a new time of 47.04. Also running in the 800m was Trevor Nichols, who placed second, running his best of 2:03.7. He was soon in the 3000m battling the same runner that had won the 800m. These two fought in a neck and neck finish, where Nichols out- kicked and won the race with a time of 9:35.21, an- other new personal record. Later in Umatilla, Nichols would break his record again by 15 seconds and run a 9:20.19 to win the 3000m. This was after he won the 800m with another new personal record of 2:03.35. For the girls 800m, Ire- lynn Kollman finished third with a new personal record of 2:47.38, which she then broke again in Umatilla where she ran 2:44.06. She also won the 1500m in John Day and placed second in Umatilla, setting a new time of 5:42.70. Over on the sprint side of things, Ed Ellsworth and Roen Waite have been running the 300m hurdles. Both athletes set new re- cords for themself in Uma- tilla, where Ellsworth ran a 46.61 and finished second, and Waite ran a 54.71 and finished sixth. There have been sev- eral younger runners from the Mustangs that have been coming out on top. Freshmen Hayden Mc- Mahon and Hallee Hisler have been placing top 10 in their respective events. McMahon won his heat and placed seventh overall in the 100m and 200m in John Day. Later in Umatilla, he finished sixth in the 200m with a new time of 25.88. Hisler has been taking top five in the sprints, plac- ing fifth overall in the 100m in John Day and winning her heat of the 200m to place second overall, run- ning a time of 28.80. She then placed fourth in the 100m and third in the 200m in Umatilla. There were additional athletes who placed in the top 10 in the 100m and 200m as well, including Ar- ianna Worden, Saul Lopez and Roen Waite. Many of the Mustangs have taken to running the 400m. The girls 4x400m relay team, made up of Arianna Worden, Irelynn Kollman, Hallee Hisler and Hannah Finch, is currently ranked first in the district and second in 2A state. The boys 4x400m relay team, made up of Jacob Finch, Ed Ellsworth, Joseph Sherman and Trevor Nichols, placed second overall in both the John Day and Umatilla meets, putting them at third in the district and fourth in 2A state. Heppner ’s jumpers have also been compet- ing strong this season. In John Day, McMahon placed eighth and Ty Boor placed ninth in long jump. Boor also competed in triple jump and placed third, fol- lowed by Lopez who fin- ished seventh and Waite who finished ninth. Hisler placed sixth in long jump for the girls in Umatilla with a leap of 13’1.5. For high jump, Sherman placed third in John Day and Uma- tilla with a jump of 5’6. Brosnan won the shot put in John Day and placed third in Umatilla, throwing a new personal record of 42’9. He also won discus in Umatilla with another new personal record of 135’5. In javelin, Nichols finished fifth in both John Day and Uma- tilla, with his best throw of the two meets being 129’11. The Mustangs will compete again this Tues- day, April 19 in the 2A District Preview. For the boys, Nichols is ranked first in the 800m, second in the 1500m and third in javelin. He is also currently ranked first in 2A state for the 800m. Also ranking in the distance races for the district is Sherman, who’s fifth in the 800m, 1500m, and 3000m, as well as third in high jump. Brosnan is ranked first in discus and second in shot put and is currently second in 2A state for discus. In the triple jump, Boor is ranked fifth in the district. Ellsworth is sixth in the district for the 300m hurdles. For the girls, Irelynn Kollman is currently ranked first for the 1500m and second in the 800m. Hisler is ranked fifth in the 100m and fourth in the 200m. Hannah Finch is behind her in fifth for the 200m. She is also first in the 400m, 800m and triple jump. Running beside her in the 400m is Arianna Worden, who’s ranked sixth. It’s still the beginning of the season, yet nearly ev- ery mark mentioned in this article was a new personal record. After Tuesday’s dis- trict preview, the Mustangs will travel to Eastern Ore- gon University on Saturday where they will compete against 25 other teams. The Blue Mountain Old Time Fiddlers are scheduled to perform at the Stokes Landing Senior Center in Irrigon on April 30. The fee to attend the event is $5 per person and dinner will be available for a nominal charge. Doors will open at 5 p.m., with dinner and music scheduled to begin at 5:30.
