Heppner track team starts season strong Fiddlers to perform
at Irrigon
By Hannah Finch
The Mustangs kicked
off their track season April 1
in Milton Freewater, where
they competed against near-
ly 30 other teams. With
some events having as
many as 40-70 competi-
tors, several of Heppner’s
athletes placed in the top 10
if not the top 5. This meet
would serve as a fresh sea-
son opener to start them off
for the next several weeks
of competition.
During the next two
meets, one being John Day
and another in Umatilla,
many of the Mustang ath-
letes would break their
personal records and then
break them again.
Joseph Sherman started
the meet off in John Day
for the Mustangs with a
win in the 1500, finishing
in 4:41.55 and breaking his
previous record by more
than 10 seconds. Sherman
also placed fourth in the
800m, followed by Ed Ells-
worth in seventh. Ellsworth
also competed in the 300m
hurdles, placing second
overall with a new time of
47.04.
Also running in the
800m was Trevor Nichols,
who placed second, running
his best of 2:03.7. He was
soon in the 3000m battling
the same runner that had
won the 800m. These two
fought in a neck and neck
finish, where Nichols out-
kicked and won the race
with a time of 9:35.21, an-
other new personal record.
Later in Umatilla, Nichols
would break his record
again by 15 seconds and run
a 9:20.19 to win the 3000m.
This was after he won the
800m with another new
personal record of 2:03.35.
For the girls 800m, Ire-
lynn Kollman finished third
with a new personal record
of 2:47.38, which she then
broke again in Umatilla
where she ran 2:44.06. She
also won the 1500m in John
Day and placed second in
Umatilla, setting a new time
of 5:42.70.
Over on the sprint side
of things, Ed Ellsworth
and Roen Waite have been
running the 300m hurdles.
Both athletes set new re-
cords for themself in Uma-
tilla, where Ellsworth ran a
46.61 and finished second,
and Waite ran a 54.71 and
finished sixth.
There have been sev-
eral younger runners from
the Mustangs that have
been coming out on top.
Freshmen Hayden Mc-
Mahon and Hallee Hisler
have been placing top 10
in their respective events.
McMahon won his heat and
placed seventh overall in
the 100m and 200m in John
Day. Later in Umatilla, he
finished sixth in the 200m
with a new time of 25.88.
Hisler has been taking
top five in the sprints, plac-
ing fifth overall in the 100m
in John Day and winning
her heat of the 200m to
place second overall, run-
ning a time of 28.80. She
then placed fourth in the
100m and third in the 200m
in Umatilla.
There were additional
athletes who placed in the
top 10 in the 100m and
200m as well, including Ar-
ianna Worden, Saul Lopez
and Roen Waite.
Many of the Mustangs
have taken to running the
400m. The girls 4x400m
relay team, made up of
Arianna Worden, Irelynn
Kollman, Hallee Hisler and
Hannah Finch, is currently
ranked first in the district
and second in 2A state. The
boys 4x400m relay team,
made up of Jacob Finch, Ed
Ellsworth, Joseph Sherman
and Trevor Nichols, placed
second overall in both the
John Day and Umatilla
meets, putting them at third
in the district and fourth in
2A state.

have also been compet-

eighth and Ty Boor placed
ninth in long jump. Boor
also competed in triple
jump and placed third, fol-
