Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, February 3, 2016 - THREE Volunteering—what keeps the community going and growing At Heppner Chamber’s Annual Town and Country Community Awards event, Joanne Burleson shared her experience with being a volunteer. This is what she said about her experi- ence after she moved to Heppner: “For sanity purposes, I volunteered and became involved in the commu- nity. I like to refer to vol- unteers as ‘stars’ because they brighten and light up our communities. There are many stars in this room and some who are not. We have some very young stars that help all year long. They are the HHS students. As stars you help on at the follow- ing events: putting together welcome baskets, Town and Country Community Awards event, ireighters, St. Patrick’s annual event activities, parades, visit shut-ins, Christmas events, weed and plant areas in our cities, volunteer to work at the Morrow County Fair and Rodeo, help with the senior meals, volunteer at the assisted living, as well as being on committees that help run our cities, and the list goes on. “As a star, you meet new friends, learn more about your community and its surroundings, but most of all you feel good inside because you know you have made a difference. Some of our stars are fading due to health, age, and some have passed on. We need to re- cruit new stars to help with the events that are lacking stars. If you are not a star, become one. Talk to your neighbors and friends and get them involved. If we don’t get new stars, then the events I have men- tioned will die. South Wil- low Creek Valley will no longer be a special place to live. It will be just a dot on the map. Think about that.” That said, the St. Pat- rick’s Committee is in need of some volunteers to help get involved in organiz- ing and putting on this big event; it can’t be done by a few volunteers. Several volunteer opportunities are available during the upcom- ing St. Patrick’s weekend, which is March 18-20. The St. Patrick’s Com- mittee is looking for volun- teers to sell buttons/kozies on Saturday during the KUMA Coffee Hour and CEILI activities at the Elks Lodge, as well as a couple of volunteers to work with the chamber of commerce in lining up the participants for the Great Green Parade and volunteers to work in the information booth, just to name a few. “Please consider get- ting involved and contact the chamber to see where you can help at 541-676- Phone: (541) 676-9228 Cell: (541) 980-6674 Fax: (541) 676-9211 188 W.
