Morter named to U of O dean’s list Raymond “Bud” Floyd Batty, 97, o f H eppner, passed away at Willow Creek Terrace A ssisted Living Facility on Saturday, January 25, 2014. Services will be held at a later date this summer. Bud Batty was born December 9,1916 to Joseph Nelson and Jessie V. (Smith) Batty at Eightmile, OR. He attended grade school at the Eightmile School where his sister. Beulah, was his sixth grade teacher. He attended two years of high school in Klamath Falls, OR while living with his Uncle Ray and Aunt Bessie Smith Aubry. He graduated from Heppner High School. He enl i st ed in the Army and went into the Air Force, where he trained as a bombardier/navigator in a B-26 Marauder. He flew 54 missions over Europe with the 39 f51 Bomb Black Death Marauder Group in the 9th Air Force. During his tour o f duty, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying C ross, A ir Medal with eight Gold Leaf Clusters, Distinguished Unit Badge, European Middle Eastern S e r v i c e Me d a l wi t h four Bronze Stars, and a Presidential Citation. He was married to Jessie Harriet Pointer March 23, 1944 at Lake Charles, LA. where he was stationed. Ronald Becket Walter Ronald Becket, 66, passed away Sunday, February 2, 2014 at his home near Seaside, OR following a long battle with cancer. At this time no service is planned. He was bom October 23, 1947 in Heppner to parent s Laur e nce and Fl or e nc e ( Be r g s t r o m) Becket. He grew up on the family farm, graduating from Heppner High School in 1965. After attending Blue Mount ai n Commu n i t y Col l e ge and Por t l and Community C ollege he w orked in the Portland area for a number of years before returning to Heppner Local Right to Life chapter to meet to farm the family farm. He loved to farm, hunt with his friends, and restore classic cars. He was an avid Seahawks fan, and would have loved to see their recent Super Bowl victory. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of choice. Death Notice Sonja M. Smith—Sonja M. Smith, 71, of Heppner, died Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at her home. She was born September 18, 1942 at Wieser, ID. A funeral service will be held Saturday, February 8, at 2 p.m. at Hope Lutheran Church in Heppner.
