The Lady Cards pulled through, dishing out defeat to the Horizon Christian Hawks on Friday as they secured an lone victory, 51-22. Hood River brought some tough players, though, and the varsity' boy’s contest ended the Cardinals’ long winning streak with a 57- 88 loss. The boy’s JV team was short handed, and also ended up with a 25-64 loss to the visitors. The C ardinal b o y s’ varsity team now carries a league record of 7-1 with a 13-3 overall record. The girls’ varsity team is 5-3 league and 7-8 overall. We were short two starters for the game; we managed to get the ball through their press most of the time, just couldn’t get our offense going and ended up turning the ball over too many times under our basket.” lone Community 4-H begins new year lONE—Rod Taylor of lone recently won second place in the No-Till/Strip- Till Irrigated division of the 2013 National Corn G row ers’ A sso ciatio n ’s (N C G A ) C o rn Y ield Contest in Oregon. Taylor a p p a re n tly w on w ith P io n e e r b ran d h y b rid 33T55, which yielded 243 bushel^ per acre. The NCGA awarded 433 state titles in this year's contest. Several lone students were honored at the January lone School Board meeting for earning nine or more college credits in high school. The students earned the credits through the Eastern Promise program, a collaboration between Blue Mountain Community College. Eastern Oregon University, Treasure Valley Community College, the InterMountain Education Service District and school districts in Eastern Oregon, that allows students to earn college credits while still in high school. ICC Sunday school works to make Bible learning fun The City of lone will hold its regular council meeting on Feb. 11 at 6 p.m. at the lone Community Church. At the meeting, the city council will discuss a Pre- Disaster Mitigation Plan. Community input is requested. Also at the meeting the engineers from Anderson and Perry will be present to review the Wastewater Feasibility Study findings. Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend. The money is being used to buy new instruments for lone’s music program. -Contributed photo I O N E — I o n e Community School is set to be the proud owner of new musical instruments thanks to a $15,000 grant from the Morrow Education F o u n d a tio n re c e iv e d Wednesday. T he fo u n d a tio n aw ard ed the funds to lone from enterprise zone payments stemming from econom ic developm ent in the C olum bia River Enterprise Zone (CREZ). The funds w ill be used to purchase flutes, clarinets, trumpets, an alto saxophone, a trombone, two snare drums, a tuba and a bass drum. All of lone’s fifth- and sixth-grade students take beginning band, and many o f them continue in pep band or advanced band through middle and high school. There are 159 students in lone’s music program, which includes choir and elementary choir with band courses. “These will be quality instruments the students can use to learn and advance, rather than having to rent from The Dalles, which can be a hardship for families,” said Sarah Crane-Simpson, the school’s principal. “We are incredibly thankful for this generous gift for our students in lone.” Crane-Simpson said the instruments have already been ordered through the InterMountain Education Service District’s co-op and will be used throughout all the grades depending on what instrument students choose to play. R u s s e ll— who also c h a irs the e n te rp ris e zone co m m ittee— said the funds are part o f a payment received through n e g o t i a t i o n s f or t ax abatement in the enterprise zone and were designated specifically for education. Port of Morrow general manager Gary Neal said education is an important part of Morrow County and industries in the enterprise zone recognize that.
