December 9,1916 to Joseph
Nelson and Jessie V. (Smith)
Batty at Eightmile, OR. He
attended grade school at the
Eightmile School where his
sister. Beulah, was his sixth
grade teacher. He attended
two years of high school in
Klamath Falls, OR while
living with his Uncle Ray
and Aunt Bessie Smith
Aubry. He graduated from
Heppner High School.
He enl i st ed in the
Army and went into the Air
Force, where he trained as
a bombardier/navigator in a
B-26 Marauder. He flew 54
missions over Europe with
the 39 f51 Bomb Black Death
Marauder Group in the 9th
Air Force. During his tour

Sonja M. Smith—Sonja M. Smith, 71, of Heppner,
died Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at her home. She was
born September 18, 1942 at Wieser, ID. A funeral service
will be held Saturday, February 8, at 2 p.m. at Hope
Lutheran Church in Heppner. Concluding service and
burial will follow at the Heppner Masonic Cemetery. A
complete obituary will follow in next week’s Gazette-
Times. Sweeney Mortuary of Heppner is in charge of
