The Skvortsovs chose to purchase in Heppner for several reasons. “Number one, you have to find a good deal,” says Charlotte. That’s my historical connection to Heppner, and one reason that I was partial to spend ing some time in Heppner,” she says. Her husband Val came to the United States from the USSR in 1991 as a result of perestroika, or the breakup of USSR, arriving in New York with only $300 in his pocket. Val said it had always been his dream to come to the United States. Not having any friends or relatives in the city, he borrowed a car, got his driver’s license, and began driving a cab. Charlotte came to New York on a business trip that same year and took a ride in his cab. One year later they were married. Over a cup of coffee, Val will tell stories of his life in Russia, like his good memories of gathering with friends and family. “We would crowd into the kitchen, many of us, and talk and visit together, that is some of my good memo ries,” Val relates.
