FOUR - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, February 15,2012 Lady Cards sail into districts Bv Anne Morter The lone Lady Car dinals sailed into the Big Sky District Tournament with four wins in a five day stretch to finish the regular season. The Lady Cards finish the season 18-4 over all and 12-2 in the Big Sky, their only losses coming to Condon/Wheeler twice, lone finishes league play as the second seed from the Big Sky Last and will open district tourney ac tion at 3 p.m. on Thursday at Hermiston High School against Horizon Christian. I he Cards played Horizon early in the season, defeat ing them 56-26. “We are expecting the same kind of intensity and the same outcom e.” said Coach Mike Garrett. Ih e p re-d istrict week was a busy stretch of basketball, partly due to the weather cancellation in mid-January. On Tuesday, February 7, the Cardinals hosted Helix. Playing with out senior Jo Anna Patton, the Cards started out a bit disoriented and shooting as cold as ice. After shooting 2-20 in the opening pe riod and trailing the cellar- dwelling Grizzlies, 4-7, the Lady Cardinals made some necessary adjustments and kicked things into gear. A 23-2 second quarter fol lowed by a 21-12 third put the game safely out of reach as they went on to w in 60-27. S h ad o w K e n d rick had a great all-around game w ith a game high 14 points and 16 rebounds. Stacee Halvorsen added 13 points. On Thursday, Feb ruary 0, lone hosted Central Christian and roared to a 53-25 win. “We were able to work on different sets and the younger kids got some good playing time,” said Garrett. The Cards built a big first quarter lead and kept the visitors firmly at bay. “With four games in five days, we were trying to keep our legs fresh but keep the intensity up for district.” The Lady Cards hit the road to Nixyaawii on Friday, February 10, and encountered another cold shooting night early on. The Cards led 8-7 after one quarter and 19-15 at the half before hitting their stride in the third, outscor- ing the Golden Eagles 19-4. With the lead stretched out to 20 plus in the fourth, the Cardinals took the game 52-34. Shadow Kendrick had a game high o f 23 points. JoAnna Patton was also in double figures with 14. Kendrick. He was also pleased with just 14 turnovers in the game despite a Nixyaawii press for most of the game. On Saturday, the seniors were honored for their last home game of the season, and they soundly defeated South Wasco. lone now heads to the Big Sky District Tour nament in Hermiston on Feb.16-18. The girls will play their first game on Thursday, Feb. 16 at 3 p.m. against Horizon Christian; the lone Boys will then face off against the winner o f the Thursday Horizon Christian versus Condon/ Wheeler match-up for their first game on Friday at 7:30 p.m. lone men advance in the first-place seed for the east side of the Big Sky League. The Pep Assembly for the basketball teams will be Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 6:30 p.m. For those who want to turn out in support of lone in the district tour nament, adult tickets are $8 for one day, $14 for a two-day pass and $20 for a three-day pass. Students are $4 for one day, $7 for a two-day pass and $10 for a three-day pass. Kids preschool age and younger are free. Elks presents a night in the wild west The Heppner Elks Club will present its 115Ul an nual “A Night in the Old Wild West” on Saturday, Feb. 18. Ladies tea and social begins at 3 p.m. with dinner of Harson’s famous pork tenderloin to follow at 6:30 p.m. Music and dancing will take place from 7 to 10 p.m., with music provided by Stevi Marie & Jackson Road.
