He received the state FFA degree—the highest pos sible degree offered by the state FFA office—and has represented the community and the state in FFA con ventions and the Washing ton Leadership Conference. He was recognized for his dedication, his concern for others, and his positive leadership in the school and community. This year’s Busi ness of the Year is Howe’s About Pizza. Howe’s has Ron and Beverly Howe been operating in H ep pner for eight years, serv ing community needs with flexibility, generosity and consistent hours. Owners Ron and Beverly Howe were recognized for making their customers feel impor tant and for knowing their “stuff.” Ron gets up early every morning to make sure everything is ready for the day. “Although the food is great,” says one person, “it’s about the ‘shining people’ who work inside—people who understand customer service, good food and a friendly family atmosphere. We are so thankful to have them and their business in our community.” W om an o f th e Year Judy Buschke is d e s c r ib e d as “ c o m passionate, kind-heart ed , d e te r mined, hard- Judy working and Buschke maybe just a little hard-headed.” Buschke has lived in Heppner most of her life, graduating from Heppner High School, get ting married in the Heppner Methodist Church, raising three children here and con tinuing to be active serving the community in many capacities. “I don’t know where Judy finds the energy in her retirement to take on all of the activities she does in this community,” states Bill Kuhn. “1 hope that once I retire, 1 have half Judy’s energy and compassion in my volunteer efforts.” The Man o f the Year is Chuck Bailey. Bai ley grew up in Heppner and was involved in the com munity from the beginning. He took all kinds of jo b s... he w orked for M orrow County, he and his wife managed an assisted living - THREE facility in Pendleton, and many high school students re m e m b e r him as jani tor. He was known as a great danc er; people say no one could o u t Chuck sh in e him Bailey on the floor. One o f his passions is flowers, and he owned the floral shop in Heppner. He now serves as Garden Club president and director of the beau tification committee, and the community has him to thank for the hanging bas kets that grace the town. The 2011 Citizen- Educator o f the Year is Sherry Matteson. Matteson has impacted the communi ty through a 15-year career as a patient, loved and e ffe c tiv e teacher. She has vo lu n teered with th e M o r Sherry row County Matteson Fair, Oregon High School Rodeo Association, Chess Mates and Friends Help ing Friends, among others. “Her children and school children are the top priori ties in her life, sacrificing to put their need above her own,” says Petra Payne. She never gives up on her students.. .she is one of the best teachers 1 have ever seen and the school and community is a better place because she has taught our children,” adds Mary Ann Elguezabal. Randall Peterson received the 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award. Peter son was rec ognized for h is g en tle spirit in life long service to the com munity. He has been a Randall part of Hep Peterson pner all o f his life, bom in the Saling House in 1929. He attended school in Hep pner and worked in his father’s business, learning the trade and also integrity, professionalism, discipline, love and commitment. He graduated in the class of 1947 and attended Whit man College in Walla Walla before serving in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956. He then took over the fam ily business upon his fa ther's death in 1958. “In the 40 years of our marriage 1 have found no weakness in Randall,” says wife Mar lene Peterson. “What you see in public life is what 1 see at home.” n W LA By Justin Pranger The Heppner National Honor Society is putting on a donation drive on January 3 1. One of the chapter’s main focuses is community service. To that end, the chapter would like to gather any extra clothing or used furniture to donate to local charities. The NHS chapter will be picking up the donations the day of the drive. Anyone who would like to arrange for a donation pick-up can contact chapter president Justin Pranger at 541-256-0069, or advisor Petra Payne at 541-676-9138 or 541-676-5466. Anyone leaving a message is asked to state their name, address and what the donation is. Council seeks input The Heppner City Council will meet on Mon day, February 13 at 7 p.m. at Heppner City Hall to discuss use o f the city’s HUD monies. The c o u n c il is seeking public input to wisely use the approximate ly $18,200 received from the sale of a HUD house. Five thousand dollars has already been allocated for a county marketing cam paign. O f the remaining monies, $7,000 is tentative ly assigned to Colt football and $6,200 is tentatively promised to go toward the repair or replacement of the HVAC unit at St. Patrick’s Senior Center. “This may not be the best mix and correct amounts,” says a statement from the council. “We need ideas and discussion in a public forum to make sound choices. Please attend and join the discussion.” Cheerleaders raffle Blazer tickets The Heppner High School cheerleaders are raf fling otTTrailblazer tickets. Tickets are for the March 22 game against the Grizzlies; the seats are the second row up from the Blazer bench. Tickets are 1 for $5, or 5 for $20.
