swine and market cattle.
He received the state FFA
degree—the highest pos
sible degree offered by the
state FFA office—and has
represented the community
and the state in FFA con
ventions and the Washing
ton Leadership Conference.
He was recognized for his
dedication, his concern
for others, and his positive
leadership in the school and
community.
This year’s Busi
ness of the Year is Howe’s
About Pizza. Howe’s has
Ron and Beverly Howe
been operating in H ep
pner for eight years, serv
ing community needs with
flexibility, generosity and
consistent hours. Owners
Ron and Beverly Howe
were recognized for making
their customers feel impor
tant and for knowing their
“stuff.” Ron gets up early
every morning to make sure
everything is ready for the
day. “Although the food is
great,” says one person, “it’s
about the ‘shining people’
who work inside—people
who understand customer
service, good food and a
friendly family atmosphere.
We are so thankful to have
them and their business in
our community.”

of her life, graduating from
Heppner High School, get

Methodist Church, raising
three children here and con

capacities. “I don’t know
where Judy finds the energy
in her retirement to take on
all of the activities she does
in this community,” states
Bill Kuhn. “1 hope that once
I retire, 1 have half Judy’s
energy and compassion in
my volunteer efforts.”

The Heppner National Honor Society is putting
on a donation drive on January 3 1. One of the chapter’s
main focuses is community service. To that end, the
chapter would like to gather any extra clothing or used
furniture to donate to local charities.
The NHS chapter will be picking up the donations
the day of the drive. Anyone who would like to arrange
for a donation pick-up can contact chapter president
Justin Pranger at 541-256-0069, or advisor Petra Payne
at 541-676-9138 or 541-676-5466. Anyone leaving a
message is asked to state their name, address and what
the donation is.
Council seeks input
The Heppner City
Council will meet on Mon
day, February 13 at 7 p.m.
at Heppner City Hall to
discuss use o f the city’s
HUD monies.
The c o u n c il is
seeking public input to
wisely use the approximate
ly $18,200 received from
the sale of a HUD house.
Five thousand dollars has
already been allocated for
a county marketing cam
paign. O f the remaining
monies, $7,000 is tentative
ly assigned to Colt football
and $6,200 is tentatively
promised to go toward the
repair or replacement of the
HVAC unit at St. Patrick’s
Senior Center.
“This may not be
the best mix and correct
amounts,” says a statement
from the council. “We need
ideas and discussion in a
public forum to make sound
choices. Please attend and
join the discussion.”
