Ladies Auxiliary to hand out memorial poppies Heppner residents will soon see the local unit of the American Legion Auxiliary distributing poppies along Main Street. The Auxiliary hands out poppies every year to remind Americans of the men and women who served and died for their country. The paper poppies are handmade by hospitalized veterans with material supplied by the Auxiliary. The poppies serve as both a source of income, since the veterans are paid, and as a form of therapy. Based on the poppies seen by soldiers in World War I, the poppy has been the American Legion’s memo rial flower since 1920. The Auxiliary was given responsi bility for the poppy program in 1924. Since then, 100% of the profits from the poppies has gone to the welfare and relief of soldiers and their families.
