Heppner Elks Free Throw Contest to be held Friday The Heppner Elks Free Throw Contest will be held on Friday, December 17, at 3 p.m. in the gym at Heppner Elementary School. The contest is open to boys and girls ages 8-13 (as of April 1, 2011 ). For more information contact Corey Sweeney at 541-256-0355. L a st T h u rs d a y the Heppner TSA Chapter swept the Fall TSA Compe tition which was held at the Blue Mountain Community College campus. Going up against six schools from Umatilla and Morrow coun ties, the chapter took home five second-place banners and two first-place ban ners. Students competed in five areas. In promotional graphics which dealt with creating a marketing ad, Zech Hintz snatched the second place spot foi the chapter. Heppner excelled in structural engineering, an event in which teams of two race against the clock to build a tower out of bass wood sticks. Digital video pro duction tested the creativity o f Bryce Fowler, Simon Rostad, and Zech Hintz whose 45 second movie City of Boardman recesses Electric Co-Op declares action on Love’s extension patronage payment Tuesday night, De cember 7, the Boardman City Council recessed their regularly scheduled meet ing to December 14. With a full audience, the council heard from the public re garding the decision to ex tend the inspection period with Love’s Travel Stop and Country Stores for the purchase of approximately 50 acres of city property located on Tower Road near Boardman. Love’s plans to build a travel stop on the property and is currently working on their prelimi nary site approvals. Audience members spoke both in favor and against the project. After an executive session, the council voted to recess the meeting to next week, at which time they could have a representative from Love’s, the city attorney, and Morrow County Plan ner, Carla McClain on hand to answer questions they may have in order to reach their decision. Love’s inspection period will expire on Janu ary 12,2011. This would be Love’s second extension if approved. The meeting was held in the council cham bers at City Hall at 7 p.m. Oregon Wheat Growers League elects new officers for 2011 Lexington Community Bible Church to host Singspiration The Lexington Community Bible Church will host an evening of music and fellowship on December 19. The Singspiration, followed by coffee, hot chocolate, and cookies, will begin at 6 p.m. Arbuckle Nordic Ski Club to meet The Arbuckle Nor dic Ski Club will hold a meeting on December 20, at 7 p.m. at the Ewing home on Hager Street. Trip leaders will be decided and daily trips planned. Bring any pictures of past ski outings that you would like to share. Anyone that cannot attend the meet ing is asked to send your current email address to Bill Ewing at ewing@century- tel.net or Steve Brownfield at stephenbrownfie@centu- rytel.net. This will allow us to send you our trip sched ule, updates on local ski conditions and the results of our ski outings. Annual community musical held The nominating committee chaired by OWGL immediate past president, Jeff Newtson, offered a slate of officers for 2011 as follows: Craig Reeder, president; Tyson Raymond, vice presi dent; Walter Powell, secretary/treasurer; and Darren Padget, immediate past president. The members present at the annual meeting in Portland on Wednesday, December 1, unanimously accepted the proposed slate of officers and President Jeff Newtson swore the new officers in effective January 1, 2011. -Contributed Photo City of Boardman honors outgoing councilors T u esd ay n ig h t, during their regular city council meeting, the Board- man City Council honored LaVem Gertlar and Randy Yates for their years o f service to the Boardman community. There is one event that has a great deal of m eaning behind it, and this event is manufacturing prototype. Every team that participates must make one toy prototype which is used for the competition and 19 copies of that toy. These copies are then donated to underprivileged children for Christmas. Heppner’s team o f Axel Lofgren, Kellie Nelson, and Simon Rostad came out at second place with their checker boards. Flight endurance is where Heppner truly took the gold. Two participants, Axel Lofgren and Simon Rostad, built rubber band pow ered airplanes. The judges decided that these two contestants would bring home the first and second place banners for their ef forts. Axel’s plane flew for a whopping 43 seconds, and Simon’s plane flew for over 30 seconds. year and both decided not to re-run for their council positions. Mayor Chet Phil lips expressed the city’s gratitude and awarded Gert lar and Yates with framed certificates of appreciation. He asked the gentleman to share words of wisdom with the two incoming council ors, Neil Livingston and Mark Pratt. lone American Legion & Auxiliary to establish Perimeter of Flags The lone American Legion and Auxiliary has recently been assigned to establish a Perimeter o f Flags to be displayed at the lone High View Cem etery each memorial day weekend. The concept of this plan will be similar to the Avenue of Flags at the Hermiston Cemetery A Memorial Day Flag Fund has been set up at the Bank of Eastern Oregon by Ruby Ann Rietmann- Rhode in member of her husband. Dean Rhode, to be used for the initial purchase of materials and construc tion of the display. Anyone wishing to have their cas ket flag flown in memory o f a military veteran can sponsor a flag pole and do nate their casket flag to the lone Legion Post for that purpose. The name of the deceased will be designated on the flag. From that point on, the lone Post will be responsible for the display, care, and storage of those flags when not in use. A lot of details have yet to be finalized. Sponsor ship of a flag can be done at anytime in the future, but it will be a great help to ob tain an initial number from which td begin. The board of directors of Columbia Basin Electric Cooperative, Inc., headquartered in Heppner, announces the retirement of $250,000 in Capital Patronage Credits. This amount represents all of the 1979 outstanding Capital Patronage Credits, and several credits from more recent years. Capital Patronage Credits represent member’s eq uity in the member-owned cooperative. With the addition of the $250,000, the Co-Op has returned $3,279,697 to its member/owners over the last 33 years. Most credit holders will receive payment by check. Active credit holders of very small value or in arrears will have payments applied to their account. Multiple account holders will receive a single check for all accounts. Funds are expected to be disbursed in mid- December 2010. Nominations being taken for 2011 Town and Country awards H eppner’s Town and Country, sponsored by CenturyLink, will be held on Thursday, January 13, and it’s time to nominate a community member for “Woman of the Year”, “Man of the Year”, “Business of the Year”, “Citizen-Educa tor of the Year”, “Lifetime Achievement” and “Youth Award”. Nomination forms are available at the Cham ber Office, Bank of Eastern Oregon, Kuhn & Spicer and Community Bank. The forms need to be completed and turned into the Chamber Office or to Kuhn & Spicer by Friday, December 24. The theme for this year’s event will be “Hep pner - A little town, where big hearts abound ... in every direction”. The event will be held at the fair grounds again this year to accommodate more room. Catering will be provided by “Cornerstone Gallery, chef Alvin Liu. The Town & Country meal tickets ($20) can be purchased starting Monday, January 3, 2011 at Heppner Chamber, Bank o f Eastern Oregon, Murray’s Drugs and Com munity Bank. Rules for the selec tion of Youth of the Year, Woman and Man o f the Year, C itizen -E d u cato r of the Year and Lifetime Achievement include: -Nominations should be subm itted by w ritten letter or on ap plication form to Heppner Chamber o f Commerce, PO Box 1232, Heppner, OR 97836. -This is not a popu larity contest and only the facts o f the nominations should be considered. Cri teria for selection shall be: Outstanding volunteer com munity service over many years; Activity in commu nity affairs in the past year; Activity in more than one phase of community life; Participation in community affairs outside of his or her business, profession or vo cation; Demonstration of a high degree of cooperation in community and civic affairs; Leadership in com munity affairs by inspira tion and example; and Con tributions to the economic base of our society. -After all nomina tions have been read and considered, each member of the selection committee shall list his/her first two choices in order of choice. -T h e C h a m b e r M anager or Com m ittee Chairman shall collect lists and tally. -Recognition plaques shall be ordered and winners notified o f honor to be given at Town and Country Banquet or Chamber Banquet if Town and Country is not held that year. City of Boardman cancels December 21 council meeting The Boardman City Council agreed to cancel their December 21 council meeting. In years past the second meeting in December has been cancelled because of its close proximity to the holidays, unless there is emergency council business to attend to.
