H e pp ner G a ze tte-T im e s, H eppner, O regon W ednesday, Decem ber 1 5 ,2 0 1 0 Parents reminded to check children’s immunization records before exclusion day The Oregon Immu nization Program reminds parents that it is the time to make sure kids’ vaccination records are complete. State law requires that all children in public and private sch ools, pre sch ools, Head Start, and certified child care facilities have up-to-date immuniza tions, or have a religious or medical exemption. Parents or guardians w ill receive a letter in late January or early February 2011 if their child’s immunization record shows that he or she has not received the required vac cinations. Children will not be able to attend school or child care starting February 16,2011, if their records on file show missing immuni zations. “ T he g o a l is to make sure children are fully protected against vaccine- preventable d ise a ses. If school and child care shot records are not up-to-date, the child will be sent home,” said Lorraine Duncan, Ore gon Public Health Division immunization manager. This year, parents should take note o f new information: -H ib va ccin e re quirement: Hib is a severe bacterial disease that most ly affects young children. In recent years, there was a shortage o f this vaccine, so children weren't required to be up-to-date on Hib imm unizations to stay in child care and preschool. Hib vaccine, which is now plentiful, is back on the required list for children through age four. -Tdap vaccine re quirement: Tdap vaccine is required for seventh-, eighth- and ninth-graders. Tdap is a tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (w hooping cough) booster. Whooping cough is a serious health concern in O regon with more than 255 cases re corded this year. In Califor nia, whooping cough is at epidemic levels; there have been about 6 ,8 0 0 ca se s reported this year, and 10 babies have died. -H epatitis A vac c in e req u irem en t: T he hepatitis A vaccine, which protects against a co m municable viral infection, is a tw o-dose series now required for children 18 m onths through seco n d grade. P arents s e e k in g im m u n ization s for their children sh ould con tact their health care provider or local health department, or call Oregon SafeNet at 1-800-SAFENET or 1-800- 723- 3638. No one can be turned away from a local health department because o f the inability to pay for re quired vaccines.
