Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, October 13,2010 - SEVEN Huffman says if elected he would vote to repeal ‘Obamacare’ Republican senate candidate makes Heppner stop By David Sykes R e p u b lic a n US Senate candidate Jim Huff man says the health care law passed by Congress, commonly called 'Obama care’ is going to increase costs and is a big take-over by government that is bad for the country. He also said if he were elected he would vote to appeal it. “ We need m ore competition in health care,” Huffinan told a small crowd gathered at the Heppner City Park. He was in Hep pner on a campaign stop last Friday. “We need to drive prices down and quality up, and this bill, which Ron Wyden voted for, is not going to do this,” Huffman said. “ We need to move away from a third-party payer system and also in troduce interstate competi tion in health insurance,” he said. Huffman also said people need to be able to transport their insurance plan with them and we need tort reform to reduce the lawsuit damages against medical providers. “ We need to cover people who are not covered, but we can do it at less cost than this thing (Obamacare),” Huff man said. On other issues Huffman said it is a shame the way elected officials have locked up the natural resources o f Oregon and hurt our small rural com munities. Huffman, who has been teaching law students about the constitution at Lewis and Clark College, said since the New Deal states rights have been eroded and the federal gov ernment has been taking more and more power. “A ....... ) iif . nit f Jim Huffman (left), candidate for US Senate, shakes hands with Joe Miller of Heppner. Huffman was on a campaign swing through Heppner last Friday. He is running against long-time Democrat incumbent Ron Wvden. -Photo by David Sykes bigger and more powerful federal governm ent has lead to less and less indi vidual freedoms.” Huffman has been a teacher at Lewis & Clark Law School since 1973. He became acting Dean in 1993, and dean in 1994; a position he held until 2006. “The system is up side down,” says Huffman. He says the way it is now the federal governm ent dictates to the states and the states to the local gov ernment. “Now the federal government is first and they always say they have the solutions to our problems. But they do not have the answers. “The federal gov ernment suing the state of Arizona (about illegal im migration) is ridiculous,” he says. Huffman also dis agrees with Wyden on how to improve the economy and create jobs. “The Dem ocrats say we need to spend vast amounts of money to create jobs. For some rea son they think if we spend a dollar ft yvill turn.into « SI.50 or $2. Wouldn’t that be great if it were true,” he says. “Wyden has spent the last 30 years in Washington and it is time for a new ap proach to things.” Huffman says indi viduals and businesses need to know that if they invest time and effort they will get a return. Private enterprise creates jobs, not the govern ment, he says. To turn the econ omy around and help the private sectors create jobs, Huffman says he would extend the Bush tax cuts. “If taxes go up on January 1 then it is a tax increase. 1 say extend all tax rates. Tax ing the rich is not effective. A tax increase would affect one half of all small busi nesses and the estate tax will go back to 55 percent.” He says he would also put a moratorium on all new regulations. On the recent bank regulation passed, which Wyden voted in favor or, Huffman said it did nothing to regulate Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. “They need regulation and they did not W -Hr Walden get it,” he says. Huffman is in favor a payroll tax holiday and says "don’t spend anymore on TARP or on stimulus. Both didn’t work except to give us a $13.6 trillion debt,” he points out. On natural recours es, Huffman says “53 per cent of the land in the state is under the control of the federal government; most of it not available for eco nomic use. Those people who have locked that land up should be ashamed of what they did,” he says about the damage the fed eral government has done to Oregon’s economy. “We need to get these resources back to work for Orego nians.” On green energy Huffman says it is ok for government to assist new technology to get off the ground, but it should not subsidize these energy sources indefinitely. “You can put windmills, solar panels and wave generating buoys until they carpet ev erything, but that is still not going to put a dent into the carbon base.” He did say he is not opposed to green energy or to subsidizing it in the short term. On several other issues Huffman said: -I will not vote for any bill that I have not read -1 will not vote for earmarks -We need to elect people who will not vote for bills that have all sorts of other things tacked on to them -O n the second amendment Huffman says the Obama administration would like to limit the right to bear arms. “We need to keep our guard up so these rights are protected.” -He believes we need regulation in business but it has gone overboard and we are to the point were it is driving up the cost to produce things in America -He is in favor of a woman’s right to choose, but believes abortion should not be paid for with tax money -He says he is not opposed to term limits, but “remember we have the power to boot people out.” Sheriff's Report County Jail on a Morrow County warrant for Failure to Pay Fine for the original charge of False Information to a Police Officer. -MCSO received a criminal mischief com plaint.
