Heppner Junior/Senior High School currently has 28 students in seventh grade, 29 in eighth, 27 in ninth, 43 in 10th, 52 in 11th and 33 in 12,h. A.C. Houghton El ementary, Irrigon, kinder garten through grade three, had 257; Irrigon Elemen tary, grades four-six-222; Irrigon High School, grades seven through 12-326; Riv erside High School, Board- man, grades seven-12-408; Sam Boardman Elementary, B oardm an, kindergarten through grade three-303; Windy River Elementary, B oardm an, grades four- six-221; Morrow Education C e n te r-M o rro w C ounty School D istrict students- 4 6 ; MEC-Umatilla School District school district stu dents-18; total-2195. Also at the m eet ing, the b oard voted to abolish the district’s local school com m ittees. The board concluded that the school committee system is not working. Generally no one runs for the positions and consequently the elec tions are an unnecessary expense for the district. A dm inistration also says that the site councils at each school provide much o f the sam e review and advice as any local school committee. In other business, the board: -approved the first reading o f a policy revi sion, adding the statement that retaliation is prohibited against anyone who files a claim o f discrimination, participates in a proceeding into English and vice versa; added a “para-profession al certificate program ” to the accepted “formal state or local academic assess m ent” ; added “ specialist or supervisor” in addition to the classroom teacher that the ed assistant is to assist; added the following tasks that the assistant may be required to do: clerical support, student control, personal care, translation or parent/family involvement activities and media center or com puter laboratory support. -approved the first reading o f policy on per sonal com m unication de vices and social media for staff as follows: staff pos session or use o f personal communications on district property, in district facili ties and while the staff is on or otherw ise opposes dis crimination under federal or state laws. -approved the first reading of a policy revision, adding the statement that veteran’s status and genetic inform ation will be pro tected in the district’s equal opportunity statement. -accepted the first reading of policy revisions concerning the hiring o f e d u c a tio n a l a s s is ta n ts , which added the statement that educational assistants must have a high school diploma or the equivalent, be at least 18 years or older, have stan d ard s o f m ore character as req u ired o f teachers, ed assistants pro viding translation services m ust have know ledge o f and the ability to provide accurate translations from a language other than English 7 A quality a ll season tire with a 7 0 ,0 0 0 m ile warranty.
