Heppner Gazette-Tim es, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, August 2 5 ,2 0 1 0 - TH R E E Foster Grandparent Program seeking volunteers The Foster Grand parent Program is sponsored by Community Counseling Solutions in Heppner and is a member of the Umatilla/ M orrow C ounty United Way. Volunteers are con sidered to be supplemental reading volunteers and w ill be assigned to students (identified by teachers) who are struggling with reading and need extra one-to-one assistance. Volunteers help students practice reading and sounding out words. They also help with com prehension, vocabulary, spelling, and writing. Vol unteers may work in small groups, or one-to-one. Vol unteers may “pull out” a student from a classroom for reading practice, or they may “push into” a classroom and serve their assigned students inside a classroom. Foster Grandparent volunteers are not teacher aides and cannot correct papers, do billboards, or sharpen pencils. Each vol unteer will work with 10 to 15 selected students on a one-to-one basis during the school year, giving 20 to 30 minutes to each child. Foster Grandparents give 20 - 40 hours per week (m inim um 15 hours) o f reading assistance under the supervision of a volun teer station (i.e., a school district, school. Head Start Program, etc.). The goal is to help youngsters with the greatest need to become independent readers by the end of the third grade. However, the program has expanded services to in clude middle school and high school to include those children with deficient read ing skills. Foster Grandpar ents receive training and orientation in reading skills. The program presently has working agreements with approximately 25 schools and/or school districts. The FGP Program provides low-income senior volunteers the opportunity to “give back” to their com munity. Foster Grandparent volunteers receive a stipend of $2.65 per hour to cover any expenses associated with volunteering. The sti pend is non-taxable and is not considered income when computing income for other federal/state pro gram eligibilities. In ad dition, volunteers receive transportation assistance to and from volunteer sites, orientation, in-service train ing, and insurance coverage (accident, liability, and ex cess auto insurance) while serving as a volunteer. To become a Fos ter Grandparent volunteer, one must: be at least 55 years of age; be in good health and able to pass a physical exam; pass a background check; and pass a criminal history review. Volunteers must also meet an incom e guideline as follows: 1 person house hold - $1805 monthly; 2 person household - $2429 monthly; 3 person house hold - $3052 monthly; and 4 person household -$3675 monthly.
