Italy trip meeting to be held In the fair building on a genuinely warm Monday afternoon, I sat ready to assist Marlene Pointer. She is the ‘volunteer’ superintendent registering and receiving the items for Department VII, Division 1. Actually, Marlene volunteers to be the superintendent for photography, but she was needed in clothing and textiles on this particular day. Laundry baskets, giant plastic covered tubs and arm loads o f items were delivered and ready to be signed in. It was a joyous and overwhelming site. Lovely embroi dery as smooth on the back as on the front, colorful and playful little girl dresses, hand loomed rugs, crocheted afghans, tote bags in m ulticolor designs, sundresses, reversible jackets and tailored woolen suits were all handed over with tender care and logged into the book with equal care. In some cases, I had a chance to ask a question or two. “What type o f sewing machine do you use?” and “ When do you find the time to do all o f this?”. Usually, the answer was something like this, “ 1 have a 35 year old Singer (or serger) that I use in the basement after the family has gone to bed and I can work without interruption.” Dam, I want to picture the seamstress with a state of the art Bernina, Pfaff or Toyota sewing machine (serger) in a brightly lit and well orga nized sewing room with a view o f the creek and/or wheat fields. She should have a mini fridge and a coffee pot by the small kitchenette handy for her use ... just like the design in Martha Stewart’s magazine. However it is accomplished, the work is lovely, original and personal and I am so grateful to be holding it at that moment. Sharing handiwork is a generous gift. I loved viewing the work submitted and watching the judge making her decisions on each item. Most o f all, I was inspired by the quilts, clothing and crafts and handiwork that passed over our tables. With certainty, I know there are some precious original items made by my friends who do not submit their work to the fair. Sadly, we all lose when these things are not displayed. A good idea is a wondrous gift to share. If you did not participate this year, please plan to make something purely original and you for next year.
