She told the board that test results were up except in the fourth and 10,h grades. She expressed concern, since both showed a downward trend over the past three years. She said that she was not quite as concerned with the 10,h-grade reading scores as they had shown improvement over the past five y ears, how ever the fourth grade test results had not improved over that period. -ap p ro v ed a tte n dance variances for three students from the Hermis- ton School District to attend MCSD. -approved a raise in substitute teacher pay to $159.47 per day. -approved a resolu tion to authorize the county treasurer to invest district funds. -approved a suc cessor contract w ith the M orrow County U nified R e c re a tio n D istric t for Advertise with the Heppner Gazette-Times Call 5 4 1 -6 7 6 -9 2 2 Ô F riday, June 11, was filled with lots o f ac tivities during the annual Celebrate Heppner festivi ties. The youngest com petitors were the 3-5 year olds participating in the Tri cycle Race. These winners received a free ice cream cone, donated by Sw eet Productions. The winners were: Zachary Brown - 3 years old; Zandra Master- son - 4 years; and Kyler Wilson - 5 years old. Flep- pner Day Care donated the tricycles. City Pqrk was also full o f games - egg race, egg toss, water balloon toss, and wheelbarrow race. Stu dents from Heppner High School helped in coordinat ing each game. Cornerstone and Murray Drugs donated coffee cards for some o f the prizes. The annual hot dog eating contest (as directed by Alvin Liu) brought in some great prizes donated by our local m erchants, gift certificates to the first place winner from Comer- store Gallery, The Stable of Youth and W illow Creek Diner and drink cards from Cornerstone and M urray’s. A dam s D istributing pro vided the hot dog buns, Heppner Family Foods dis counted the hot dogs, and Rusty Estes was standing by, just in case his services were needed. Appar ently Donnie, the Healy’s dog was enam ored with Sheepo and was distracted and would not take off run ning to the finish line, until much prodding and finally remembered what he was there to do and made it just in time to take third place.
