WCVEDG members also liked what they heard and agreed to write a letter of support in favor of the endeavor. C hristensen said the sorghum is a hybrid developed by a California company called Ceres that must be grown under center pivot irrigation and can get up to 20 feet tall. He said the advantage of using agricultural product rather than wood waste to bum in the co-gen plant is control over the condition of the material. He said with sor ghum they can control the moisture content between 30 and 40 percent, and it is generally cleaner than wood. “The trouble with wood waste is the moisture content can be all over the place,” he said. “And it can have foreign matter included.” He said trucking the material from the Herm- iston area where there is more irrigated land would not be a problem, but ad mitted that if he could get irrigated growers on board in South Morrow County he would, which would save on transportation costs. He met with Hermiston area growers in February and April and there are cur- Sheriff’s Report The Morrow County Sheriff’s Office reports han dling the following business: March 15:-MCSO arrested a 43 year old male subject on an 1JC warrant for Failure to Pay Fine/ Driving While Suspended Misd. -MCSO received a theft complaint from a staff member at Heppner High School stating that a student reported $200 stolen from her wallet while on the bus this morning. -M C S O h a d a walk-in report fraud on her debit card. -MCSO issued a citation to a juvenile female subject for Violation of the Basic Rule by going 87 mph in a 55 mph zone. -MCSO received a driving complaint in which the caller stated that a ve hicle was being driven by a male that was heavily intoxicated. The grower’s co-op located in the Ontario area is looking at putting in a 20 megawatt generating plant and also has a pellet operation that sends the sorghum pellets as far away as England. “They are trying to convert from coal power over there and pay premium prices,” he said. C hristensen said growers should expect to get 15 to 20 tons an acre o f the sorghum and that the co-op is looking for around 5.000 acres to sup ply the Heppner plant. He said they have 10 growers in the Ontario area and they are averaging 16 to 19 tons per acre. He said the co-op is working on financing to get a co-gen plant operating in that area. Christensen has lived and farmed in the Treasure Val ley area for many years, and is well know there. Heppner Mayor Les Paustian, who is originally from the area, said he did not “know ” Christensen, but knew “of him”. G row ers in that area formed a co-op, Agri Energy Producers, to control the process from growing to distribution to producing electricity.
