C arm en’s favorite part of the yard is a raised front bed built with land scape blocks and her fa vorite plants are her bright yellow daylilies. Some o f the plants found in their yard are car nations, g azanias, m ari golds, clematis vine, lilac, Alberta Spruce, arborvitae, fo rsythia, pink gladioli, dianthus, daisies, Russian Sage, spirea, azalea, mums, barberry shrubs, apple tree, peach tre e , co ral bells, cam panula. Snow on the Mountain, peony, Blue Star juniper, sweet woodruff and iris. Jacob’s Ladder and an undeterm ined variety o f tree volunteer throughout. Vegetables include carrots, radishes, cucum bers, tomatoes and a large quantity of robust looking bro cco li. C arm en raises herbs to use in cooking, a talent she has in addition to her green thumb. Their soil is good w ith lots o f earthw orm s and they haven’t needed to fertilize much. Red rock and river rock have been hauled in to use for different projects. A current project is putting up a cyclone fence in a side yard. The H ealy’s have been visited by w ildlife such as deer and lots o f birds including cranes. On the tamer side is their ador able Boston Terrier, Don nie. When asked what advice they have for fellow gardeners, both Jerry and Carmen m entioned ‘a lot o f w ork’. But, their laugh ter gave them away; they enjoy what they are doing and their home and garden show it. Navy Airman finds new homeport in San Diego Navy Airman Brandon R. Wheeler, whose wife, Sandra, is the daugh ter o f Maria Del Carmen Medina of Boardman, along with 3, 500 crew members, assigned to the N im itz- class aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) re cently arrived at the ship’s new homeport at Naval Air Station North Island, San Diego on April 12. Over the last five years Vinson has been un dergoing a massive over haul in Newport News, VA. The ship upgraded its infra structure to last another 25 years w hile m odernizing its combat systems and air wing capabilities. Vinson docked after completing a coast-to-coast transit. Dur- ing the transit, Vinson and its accom panying strike group took part in Opera tion Southern Seas 2010, a multinational training op eration allowing U.S. and international forces to par ticipate in training exercises together. Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Ec uador and the United States took part in the exercise. Morrow County Dryland Crop Tour set for June 18 T his y e a r’s D ry land Crop Tour will focus on variety selection and weed control options for fallow-based systems. The tour will begin at 2 p.m. on Friday after noon, June 18. A social (5 p.m.) and steak dinner (6 p.m.), offered at the con clusion o f the tour, will take place at the Mader- Rust Farm on Butter Creek. Participants are asked to co n trib u te to the dinner by bringing a salad (A-H); side-dish (I-Q), or dessert (R-Z).
