Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, February 3,2010 - FIVE Lady Mustangs cruise through weekend The Heppner Lady Mustangs used tenacious defense and a balanced scoring attack to continue their perfect conference record. Only once did the opponent score double dig its in a quarter against the Mustangs scrappy defense. On the offensive end Hep pner had different players step up each night. Friday night, the Mustangs took on the Stan field Tigers at Heppner and jumped out to a 28-9 lead at halftime and cruised to a 47-16 win. In a game which was never in doubt, Heppner coaches were able to play their entire bench to get valuable playing time to the younger players. T o rri L o v g re n sco red 18 p o in ts and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Mustangs offen sively. Brynna Rust chipped in with 14 points, six re bounds and five steals. Against Irrigon on Saturday night, Heppner shut out the Knights in the opening quarter to take an early 19-0 lead. Irri gon fought back to score 20 points in the second quarter to get the game within seven at 27-20. Erin Price scored 16 of her 20 points in the second half to help Heppner take control of the game. Price also had three rebounds and four steals. Joanna Patton played an all around game to finish w ith 10 points, six rebounds and seven steals to lead the team defensively. Heppner shot 76% from the free throw line converting 13 of 17 attempts. Heppner will look to continue their conference dominance as they travel to Enterprise Friday night and Elgin Saturday night. The typical outcome o f an Ione-Central Christian game is a high score and Tuesday’s contest was no exception. When the final buzzer blew, the Cardinals prevailed 89-77. The Cardinals took a lead they never relin quished with five minutes gone in the first quarter, but it was never a comfortable lead. In the second quarter, the Cards built a 14 point lead with three minutes to go until the half. However, the Warriors ran off nine points in a minute to cut the lead to five. Zac Orem hit a basket just before halftime to give lone a 43-35 lead. In the third quar ter, the Warriors canned two threes but those were matched by two threes from Zac Orem. The Warriors did outscore the Cards in the third 25-22 and lone led by just five points entering the final frame. Central Chris tian would narrow the score to four before the Cards would move their lead back to seven. With 2:17 to go, Zac Orem connected on his fourth three-pointer of the day followed by a lay- in from a Matt Hams steal. Matt Hams scored eight points in the last minute and a half to help the Cardinals finally pull away for good. Zac Orem led all scorers with 29 points fol- 16wed by Matt Hams w ith 28. Tanner Rietmann, play ing most of the game deep in foul trouble, chipped in with 12. The Cards estab lished a 28-22 rebound ing advantage led by eight boards from RJ Ramos. Matt Hams had seven as sists and five steals. Tanner Rietmann led the team with six steals and Zac Orem added five more. “We played terrific offensively,” said Coach Dennis Stefani but noted that he did not think it was the team’s best defensive effort. “ We got on them early and were able to sus tain the lead.” Third annual alumni softball game to be held All female H ep pner alumni are invited to play in the third annual alumni softball game. The game will be played on Fri day, March 12, at 4 p.m. The cost to play is $5 per player. All proceeds will go to the 2010 Mustang softball team. Those plan ning to play asked to RS VP by March 1. Parents/guardians are asked to bring proof of residency and insurance information for their child. Colt Basketball still taking sign-ups for Adult Basketball League The Heppner Colt Basketball Program is still taking sign-ups for its Adult Basketball League. G am es w ill be Sunday afternoons starting on February 21 at the el ementary gym and extend ing through the month of March. There will be open games on February 7 and 14 at 9 a.m. in the elementary gymnasium for those inter ested in participating in the league. Cost of the league will be $30 per player and will include a jersey and cover the costs associated with use of the facilities. The rest of the proceeds will be donated to the Colt bas ketball program. The league is open to both women and men who are out o f high school. If there is enough interest there will be sepa rate m en’s and w om en’s leagues. Down 9-10 at the start o f the quarter, the freshman supplied a 9-0 run to open up an eight point lead. Beth M orter followed up with a three point play followed again by two free throws and the Lady Cardinals were up by 13 w ith half of the second quarter to go. Central Christian pulled back to within 10 points at halftime but lone rallied to a 10-1 run in the third quarter, two of those points coming courtesy of the opponents who mistak enly banked in a shot for the Cardinals. The Lady Cards were able to make whole sale substitutions and rolled to the 55-30 win. “A fter the Echo game, 1 was concerned how we would come out intensi ty-wise,” said Coach Mike Garrett. He was pleased to note that the team “played with the best intensity all season. Our plan was to limit the amount of their two main scorers. The girls did an outstanding job with their man-to-man defense.” Shadow Kendrick led the team in scoring with 15 points. Beth Morter added 12 and 10 Cardinals put points in the scorebook.
