Lady Mustangs cruise through weekend
The Heppner Lady
Mustangs used tenacious
defense and a balanced
scoring attack to continue
their perfect conference
record. Only once did the
opponent score double dig
its in a quarter against the
Mustangs scrappy defense.
On the offensive end Hep
pner had different players
step up each night.
Friday night, the
Mustangs took on the Stan
field Tigers at Heppner and
jumped out to a 28-9 lead
at halftime and cruised to
a 47-16 win. In a game
which was never in doubt,
Heppner coaches were able
to play their entire bench to
get valuable playing time to
the younger players.

Cardinals outscore Central Christian 89-77
The lone C ardi
nals waited until there was
two minutes left to go in
their Tuesday game against
Central Christian to put
the pesky opponent away.
The typical outcome o f
an Ione-Central Christian
game is a high score and
Tuesday’s contest was no
exception. When the final
buzzer blew, the Cardinals
prevailed 89-77.
The Cardinals took
a lead they never relin
quished with five minutes
gone in the first quarter, but
it was never a comfortable
lead. In the second quarter,
the Cards built a 14 point
lead with three minutes to
go until the half. However,
the Warriors ran off nine
points in a minute to cut the
lead to five. Zac Orem hit a
basket just before halftime
to give lone a 43-35 lead.
In the third quar
ter, the Warriors canned
two threes but those were
matched by two threes from
Zac Orem. The Warriors did
outscore the Cards in the
third 25-22 and lone led by
just five points entering the
final frame. Central Chris
tian would narrow the score
to four before the Cards
would move their lead back
to seven.
With 2:17 to go,
Zac Orem connected on
his fourth three-pointer of
the day followed by a lay-
in from a Matt Hams steal.
Matt Hams scored eight
points in the last minute and
a half to help the Cardinals
finally pull away for good.
Zac Orem led all
scorers with 29 points fol-
16wed by Matt Hams w ith
28. Tanner Rietmann, play
ing most of the game deep
in foul trouble, chipped in
with 12. The Cards estab
lished a 28-22 rebound
ing advantage led by eight
boards from RJ Ramos.
Matt Hams had seven as
sists and five steals. Tanner
Rietmann led the team with
six steals and Zac Orem
added five more.
“We played terrific
offensively,” said Coach
Dennis Stefani but noted
that he did not think it was
the team’s best defensive
effort. “ We got on them
early and were able to sus
tain the lead.”

Lady Cards take 55-30 win
over Central Christian
The lone Lady Car
dinals were happy to see
Shadow Kendrick go to
town in the second quarter
of their Tuesday match-up
with Central Christian.
Down 9-10 at the
start o f the quarter, the
freshman supplied a 9-0
run to open up an eight
point lead. Beth M orter
followed up with a three
point play followed again
by two free throws and the
Lady Cardinals were up by
13 w ith half of the second
quarter to go.
Central Christian
pulled back to within 10
points at halftime but lone
rallied to a 10-1 run in the
third quarter, two of those
points coming courtesy of
the opponents who mistak
enly banked in a shot for the
Cardinals. The Lady Cards
were able to make whole
sale substitutions and rolled
to the 55-30 win.
“A fter the Echo
game, 1 was concerned how
we would come out intensi
ty-wise,” said Coach Mike
Garrett. He was pleased to
note that the team “played
with the best intensity all
season. Our plan was to
limit the amount of their
two main scorers. The
girls did an outstanding
job with their man-to-man
defense.”
Shadow Kendrick
led the team in scoring
with 15 points. Beth Morter
added 12 and 10 Cardinals
put points in the scorebook.
Stefanie Archer racked up
