Wrong. It might come as a shock, but more that seventy percent o f all the drugs and m edicines we use today come from our rainforests. Well it is a good thing they will be around for a very long time! Oh wait. They w on’t. Experts estim ate that the last re maining rainforests could be consumed in less than forty years. We a r e l o s i n g Earth's greatest biological treasure. Rainforests once covered fourteen percent o f the earth’s land surface: now they cover a mere six percent. About one and a half acres o f rainforest are lost every second due to rain fo rest d efo restatio n . Rainforests are being de stroyed because the value o f the rain fo rest land is seen as only the value o f its tim ber by thoughtless governments, multi-national logging companies, and land ow ners. Most rainforests are cleared by chainsaws, bulldozers, and fires for its timber value and then are followed by farming and ranching operations. The Amazon Rain forest alone covers over a billion acres o f land, en compassing areas in Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia and the Eastern Andean region of Ecuador and Peru. If the Amazon R ainforest were a country, it would be the ninth largest country in the world. The Amazon Rain forest has been described by some as the “Lungs of our Planet” because it is the mass producer o f changing carbon dioxide into oxygen. More than 20 percent o f the world’s oxygen is produced sin. One hectare (2.47 acres) may contain over 750 types o f trees and 1,500 species of higher plants. At least 80% o f the w orld’s diet originated in the Tropical Rainforest. Its bountiful gifts to the earth include fruits like avoca- does, coconuts, oranges, lemons, grapefruit, bananas, pineapple, mangos and to matoes; vegetables includ ing corn, po tato es, rice, squash and yam s; spices like black pepper, chocolate, cinnam on, ginger, sugar cane, coffee and vanilla and few types o f nuts. And that is only a portion o f what it has to offer. There are over 3,000 types o f fruits and vegetables found in the rain forest; o f these, only 200 are now' in use in the Western World, but the Indians of the rainforest use over 2,000. The problem and the solution o f the destruction o f the rainforest are both econom ic. G overnm ents need money to serv ice their debts, settlers need money to feed their families, and com panies need to make profits. The simple fact is that the rainforest is being destroyed for the income and profits it holds. Experts agree that by leav ing the rainforest intact and harv estin g its many fruits, vegetables, nuts, oil- producing plants, and me dicinal plants, the rainforest would have more economic value than if it were cut down to make grazing land for cattle or for timber. Each and every per son in the United States can be a part o f the solution by purchasing renewable and sustainable rainforest prod ucts and resources, we can all be a part of the solution and the rainforests o f the world and their people can be saved.
