Well #3, into the water distribution system on October 1. The City is feeding the w ater from Well #3 to reduce the nitrates in the drinking water. The nitrate level has now dropped from about 14 parts per million o f nitrate to less than three parts per mil lion. The US Environmental Protection Agency has set the maximum contaminate level for nitrates at 10 parts per million. With the new well on line, the water in the Irrigon water system meets all state and federal regulations for drinking water. The City of Irrigon waited to ensure that the system would operate properly and the nitrate level would drop and hold before announcing the change. There is still much more to be done with the Water Improvement Project, according to Public Works Director, Keith White. The new reservoir needs to be constructed and more dis tribution piping needs to be installed. The city wanted however, to start furnishing the low nitrate water to the families on the Irrigon water system as soon as possible so that people could safely use the water for all pur poses, including consump tion by infants and pregnant mothers.
