A strong third quar ter was the difference in the Arlington game played January 11 in lone. Leading 16-14 at halftime, the Lady Cards outscored Arlington 13-1 to build a 29-15 lead entering the final fram e. B ack-to-back steals and layins by Tiana Camarillo and Kylee Svetich midway through the quarter built the lead to 10. After Brenna Ri- etmann hit two free throws and and Beth Morter made a shot, the lone lead was stretched to 14. In the fourth quarter, the Lady C ards kept the momentum going, b u ild ing the lead to 18 points before Arlington mustered eight unansw ered points, closing the lead to 10. lone responded w ith a 9-1 run to close the game and seal the 44-26 win. Kylee Svetich led the team in scoring w ith 11. Brenna Rietmann had nine and Tiana Camarillo added eight. H elix used tough defense and great outside shooting to set the Lady Cards on their heels in the early going during their Sat urday, January 12 game. Kylee Svet ich scored six points in the period and with three min utes to go, the Lady Cards cut the Grizzlies lead to five points, 18-13. However, He lix finished the quarter with a 10-0 run to make it a 28-13 halftime score. Helix kept the pedal to the metal in the second half, connecting on three of their five three-pointers and walking away from lone, w inning the game 63-28. Kylee Svetich led the Cardinals in scoring with six points. Emily Rietmann added five and Beth Morter - lone 6-16, Helix 10-14. Fouls - lone 11, Helix 15. Ione JV boys fall to Echo C o m in g from 10 points down, the lone JV team came back within two but couldn’t get closer, fall ing to Echo in an exciting 43-41 game held in Echo on January 8. As the fourth quarter ticked away, the lone JV ’s found them selves slow ly picking away at Echo’s lead. Marco Juarez hit a big three pointer and RJ Ramos hit an inside shot and with 1:30 to go, lone trailed by just two 40-38. Echo hit a free throw before Gunner Jessen found RJ Ramos with a good pass underneath and Ramos hit the shot to cut the lead to Varsity girls follow JV lead and take wins over Stanfield and Enterprise By Alita Nelson The v a rsity g irls took the lead from the start against Stanfield and never let it go. In the first quarter the girls held a 10 point lead and followed in the second quarter with a seven point lead, putting the half-time score at 18 to 11. The girls came out strong in the third quarter to score twice as many points as the Stanfield Tigers, tak ing the score to 33-18. With a strong fourth quarter the girls continued there lead by 14 and ended the game 43 to 29. Megan Orr led the girls to victory with 15 points, Katie Kilkenny had nine for the night, Torrie Lovgren scored five and Brynna Rust and Kylie Do herty scored four each. Erin Price and Kristen VanCleave each scored two w ith Taylor Kempas and Jessica Hughes each scoring one point. The varsity girls showed on Saturday that they could play strong two nights in a row. The girls scored 16 points to Enter prise’s eight by the end of the first quarter. Even though the Outlaws scored 18 points in the fourth it wasn't enough to take the lead away from the Mustangs, leaving the final score 59 to 44. Megan Orr led the team with 22 points, Kris ten VanCleave scored 15, and Katie K ilkenny fol lowed with 11 points. Photo hy The resa Crawford one. Echo hit a couple more free throws to go back up 43-40. The Cards had their chances, sending D alton Campbell and Tanner Ri etmann to the line to shoot free throws. Only Campbell connected and on just one to narrow the margin to two but time ran out. T anner R ietm ann led the team in scoring with 14 points. RJ Ramos added 10 and Gunner Jessen had nine. Also scoring for lone was Luke Bradfield with 2, Alex Rietmann w ith two and Dalton Campbell with one. G unner Jessen led the team with four assists and he and Tanner Rietmann each had eight rebounds. Tanner Rietmann also had five steals and RJ Ramos had four. “It was a very physi cal game,” said Coach Jim Swanson. "I was proud that they came from 10 points down and almost won. Our last five or six free throws would not fall.” He noted that the team had ju st 16 turnovers and over 40 re bounds. He com m ended Tanher Rietmann.
