December 12,2007 lone student selected for Oregon All State Honors Orchestra Eric Jepsen, a soph omore at lone High School, was recently selected to play violin in the O regon All State High School Honors O rchestra. The orchestra, com posed o f 107 o f the top music students in the state, will perform at the Huit Center for Performing Arts in Eugene on Sunday afternoon, January 27. The concert will be one o f the highlights o f the Oregon Music Educators Associa tion (OMEA) annual con vention w hich w ill take place in Eugene on January 25 - 27. The various groups will rehearse togeth er for three days and put on a concert at the conclusion o f the weekend. The orchestra will be conducted by Jeff Edinons o f San Diego, CA. There were 81 high school violinists from around the state who auditioned for a spot in the All State Or chestra this year. Both musicians are students of Lisa Robertson, Professor of Violin at East ern Oregon University. Heppner Junior and Senior High students participate in Knowledge Master Thousands o f stu dents throughout the country and in many foreign coun tries competed December 5 in the 49th K now ledge Master Open academic com- petition. M iddle school, junior high, and high school students faced their comput ers and 200 tough questions to vie for top scores based on the accuracy and speed of their answers. H e p p n e r H ig h ’s school team consisted of 11 students and the Heppner Junior High team consisted o f 10 students. This is a great opportunity for stu dents to compete nationally and to test their knowledge against their peer group nation wide. “The students worked together, performed very well, and had fun,” said Petra Payne, advisor for the event. The contest runs on classroom co m p u ters to allow all students the op portunity to compete with out the expense of traveling to a central site. Results o f the contest are ta b u lated into overall, state, and enrollm ent-size rankings by Academic Hallmarks, a Colorado publishing firm that hosts the event. The high school team included Emily Thompson, Ashley Wolff, Lane Wright, Spencer Palmer, Sarah Bal lard, Maggie Armato, Grant Smith, Kelsey Wolff, Sean Murray, Julia Meyer, and Frank Meyer. Heppner Elementary students stepped up to the challenge of a poetry contest. The theme for this contest was Nature and Me. Seventeen first graders entered the contest. Forty-one fifth and sixth graders not only entered the poetry contest, but illustrated them also. The students brought canned food that they collected to be put in the Christmas boxes being distributed by the Center. Sixty-six boxes will be delivered on December 20. Mid-Columbia Bus Company donated the driver and the bus for the trip to the Neighborhood Center. . • • Arbuckle Nordic Club winter activities announced The trip s involve skiing or snow shoeing on fairly flat terrain. Meeting date changed for MC Creative Arts and Crafts M o rro w C o u n ty C reative A rts and C rafts have changed their meeting date to December 18 at the Mills' home. Lunch will be served for all members at 1 p.m. After lunch, members will exchange the gifts ($10) that are brought. 2008 members will be installed at this meeting. They are: Trish Sweeney, president; Shirley McNary, v ic e - p r e s id e n t; Na n c y Propheter, secretary; and Sharon Harrison, treasurer. At the last meeting, two days in January were picked to do paintings or crafts together at the fair annex.
