The lone M iddle School girls split their games this past weekend, losing a close one to C ondon at C ondon on Friday and defeating Sherman County at home on Saturday. In th e ir third m atchup this season, the lone girls looked like they had Condon handled, leading by 10 points heading into the final quarter. But the C ardinals lost starter Mary Rietmann to fouls in the third quarter and Condon took advantage, outscoring the Cardinals 14- 2 in the final frame to take the 33-31 win. Beth Morter led the lone scorers with 11 points. Mary Rietmann added seven follow ed by Shadow Kendrick with five, Stacee H alvorsen with four and Makenna Ramos and Jordan Peterson with two each. "It was tough to lose like that but the girls really played their hearts out,” said Coach Lynn Dee Ramos. "Sometimes in those close games, you just don't get the breaks you need to win.” On Saturday, lone led coast to coast against Sherman County, on their way to a 21-14 win. Shemian had only two points in each of the first three quarters before scoring eight in the fourth to get as close as they did. Mary Rietmann and Jordan P eterson led the Cardinal scoring effort with six each followed by Shadow K endrick with five and Makenna Ramos with four. C e n t u r y T el p e rs o n a l touch • advanced com m un ication s Mustang boys split on road trip Mustang boys jump on Rockets After earning a hard-fought win over the Enterprise Outlaws by a score of 52-50, the Heppner Mustang boys fell in overtime to the Elgin Huskies 58-54 on their January 5 and 6 road trips. The Mustangs are 2-2 in the Blue Mountain Conference and 6-5 overall. The Mustangs trailed 10-9 after one at Enterprise and still trailed 28-22 at the half despite six points from Nacho Elguezabal and four from Nathan Van Cleave in the second quarter. Lane Bailey had five points and Andre Rauch four as they crawled to within 36-34 after three. The Mustangs got five points from Elguezabal and four from RJ Farrens, as they pulled out the win in the fourth quarter. Elguezabal finished with 14 points and six rebounds. Bailey had 10 points, Farrens had eight points and 12 assists, Rauch had six rebounds and two steals, Matt McCabe had three steals and Justin Delveaux had two steals. The next night was not much different as the Huskies led 10-6 after one and 24-15 at the half despite six points in the second quarter from McCabe. The Mustangs still trailed by nine after three at 37-28, but got 16 points from Elguezabal and four from McCabe in the fourth to tie the game at 48-48 and send it to overtime. McCabe hit a three-pointer in the overtime period but Elgin pulled away for the win. Elguezabal led the Mustangs with 28 points and 12 rebounds. McCabe added 13 points and five steals. Mustang JV girls win two By Kick Paullus The H eppner Mustang JV girls took two home court wins over the over the weekend beating the Enterprise Outlaws 32- 22 on Friday and the Elgin Huskies 54-22 on Saturday. The Mustangs, now 14-2 on the year, will be at Union of Friday, February 2, at home against Weston-McEwen on Saturday, and at Irrigon on Tuesday, February 6. In a defensive first h alf, the M ustangs and Outlaws were tied at 9-9 before they got going in the third, outscoring Enterprise 17-4. The team got five points from Jessica Hughes, four p o in ts from Kassi Wilson and a three-pointer from Brynna Rust to take a 26-13 lead into the fourth. Kelsie Fox had three points in the fourth as the Mustangs held on for the win. Hughes finished with nine points, five steals, and three assists with Kristen Van Cleave adding seven points, eight rebounds, and two steals. Erin Price had five rebounds, four steals, and three assists, Catherine M cE llig o tt had five rebounds, four assists, and two steals, Maggie Armato had four rebounds and two steals, and Rust had five steals. Nacho Elguezabal got the Mustangs going by scoring on a pass from Lane B ailey, and then A ndre R auch sco red tw ice, E lguezabal scored o ff a rebound and Bailey hit a lay- up and a jumper for a 12-0 lead. After a Rocket basket, Elguezabal scored twice to m ake it 16-2 w ith the Mustangs eventually taking a 16-7 lead after one. B ailey hit a long jumper to open the second and Justin Delveaux hit a short ju m p e r, but the Rockets came back to get within five before Bailey scored off a pass from RJ Farrens. Matt McCabe then hit a running jumper. After a R ocket b a sk e t, A aron Allstott score off a pass from Jared Huddleston to give the Mustangs a 26 17 lead at the half. The Rockets scored the first five points of the third before Farrens hit a three-pointer and scored off a pass from McCabe. Mustang girls beat Tigerscots in overtime By Rick Paullus The Heppner Mustang girls had to go an extra period but they came out on top beating the Weston- Price finished with McEwen Tigerscots 45-37 on Saturday, January 20, in 10 points, four steals, and Athena in Blue Mountain Conference play. The Mustangs tw o assists w ith M ilner improved to 8-0 in the BMC and 14-2 overall with the adding seven points, five win. rebounds, and two assists.
