The M ustangs led 14-7 after one and 26-23 a the half, but came out cold in the third as the Tigerscots outscored them 10-3 to take a 33-29 lead into the fourth. The Mustangs turned up the defensive pressure and it fed the offense as they came back for the win. Matt McCabe led the Mustangs with 21 points in cluding three three-pointers, five assists and three steals. Lane Bailey added 12 points. RJ Farrens scored 10 points and had six assists and five steals. Nacho Elgu- ezabal had eight rebounds and two blocked shots and Andre Rauch and Jared Hud dleston each had five re bounds. The Mustangs hit 17 of 21 free throws for the game. Mustang boys hang on to beat Huskies By Kick Pautlus A big second half broke a halftime tie and carried the Heppner Mustang JV girls to a 37— 8 win over the Weston-McEwen Tigerscots on Saturday, January 20, in Athena. The Mustangs, now 12-2 on the year, will be at home on Friday, January 26, against Enterprise and again on Saturday, January 27, against Elgin. The Mustangs outscored the Tigerscots 12-5 in the third, then got four points from Brynna Rust in the fourth as they held on to their lead and take the win. Emily Thompson led the Mustangs with eight points with Kristen Van Cleave adding six points and three rebounds. Melissa West had four assists and three steals, Kassy Wilson had five rebounds and three steals, Erin Price had three assists and three steals, Jessica Hughes had three steals and two assists, and Sarah Milner and Catherine McElligott each had five rebounds. The Mustangs, 10-0 in the BMC and 16-2 overall, will be at Union on Friday, February 2, and at hom e ag ain st W eston- McEwen on Saturday and at Irrig o n on T uesday, February 6, in BMC play. Aftan Betsinger had 12 points. Megan Orr had six points and Lyndi Patton hit a th re e -p o in te r as the Mustangs took a 22-14 lead after one. Kylie Doherty had six points in the second as they increased their lead to 39-20 at the half. Betsinger had seven points and Regi Seitz four points in the third. Heppner held on for a 62-56 win on Saturday, Jan. 27 in Blue Mountain Conference play. The Mustangs, now 6- 4 in the BMC and 10-7 overall, have crucial league games this weekend as they travel to first-place Union on Friday, Feb. 2, and come home to face second-place W eston-M cE w en on Saturday. Feb. 3. They will be at Irrigon on Tuesday, Feb. 6. Andre Rauch scored th ree p oints early, R.J. F arren s fed N acho Elguezabal twice for lay-ins and Jared Huddleston scored o ff a rebound as the Mustangs took a 9-4 lead midway through the first. Rauch scored off a drive and Farrens hit a three-pointer to close out the first with the Mustangs leading, 14-9. F arren s fed Elguezabal for a lay-in and hit a three-pointer, and Matt M cC abe m ade tw o free throw s and hit a three- pointer to make it 24-12. Elguezabal scored six points inside as the Mustangs took a 31-18 lead at the half. Elguezabal hit two free throw s and Rauch scored twice inside to open the th ird , giv in g the M ustangs a 37-18 lead. E lguezabal scored twice more off feeds from Farrens, and McCabe scored off a pass from Lane Bailey to make it 43-25. Huddleston hit three straig h t th ree- pointers to end the third, to give the M ustangs what seemed to be a comfortable lead at 52-30. F arren s fed Elguezabal for lav-ins tw ice to make it 56-37 early in the fo u rth , but the H uskies scored 11 straight to cut the lead to 56-48. Huddleston and Farrens each hit two free throws to make it 60-48 with 1:25 left. The Huskies then went on an 8-2 run to end the game and get within six points. Elguezabal finished with 23 points. 13 rebounds and tw o steals, w ith H u d d lesto n adding 13 points. Rauch added 1 1 points and seven rebounds. Farrens finished with 13 assists and three steals, and Bailey had five rebounds and two a s s is ts . M cCabe had three steals and two assists.
