The Mustangs, 9-0 in the BMC and 15-2 overall, will be at Union on Friday. February 2, at home against second place W eston-M cE w en on Saturday, and at Irrigon on T uesday, February 6, in BMC play. Lyndi Patton had seven points in the first as the Mustangs took a 16-7 lead. Aftan Betsinger had six points and Patton and Katie Kilkenny each had four as they built their halftime lead. Kilkenny and Taylor Kempas each had four points in the third as they extended their lead to 46-17 after three. Betsinger and Jessica Hughes each had four points in the fourth as they cruised to the easy win. B etsin g e r had 14 points, nine rebounds, and two steals. Patton added 11 p o ints and tw o steals, Kilkenny had eight points and three a ssists, and S herilyn Peck had four rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Cardinal varsity boys Mustang boys lose heartbreaker to Outlaws win one, lose one The lo n e b o y s’ varsity split their games last weekend, suffering a tough loss on the road against Nixyaawii on Friday and coming back to hold off a charging Sherman County team on the lone home floor on Saturday. The Cardinals' league record now stands at 7-3, keeping them in second place behind Nixyaawii in the Western Division of the Big Sky East. Their season record is 11 -6. On Friday, January 26, the host N ixyaaw ii Golden Eagles got out to an early lead and the Cardinals stru g g le d to get going. Down 8-13 a fte r one, quarter, lone fell behind lb- 29 by halftime. The Golden Eagles put the C ardinals away in the third quarter outscoring them 25-10 and coasted home for the 73-47 win. Paul Hams led the Cardinals in scoring with 12 p o in ts fo llo w ed by Kip K rebs w ith ten. lone stru g g le d w ith their shooting, hitting just 29% of their shots from the floor compared to a sizzling 53% for Nixyaawii. The Cardinals also fell short on the boards, giving up a 35-42 advantage to th e ir hosts. In o th er statistical categories. Kip Krebs led with three assists and Clay Morter had five steals. "We got caught up in their game and it hurt us” said Coach Dennis Stefani. “It is a hard place to play and we just never got going.” On Saturday night, the Cardinals took the floor looking rejuvenated and ready to play. lone led 15- 14 after one and 29-23 at the half. The Cards opened up a 10-point lead in the third but the Huskies closed in on som e hot th ree point shooting, taking the lead 45- 44 at the end of three. But the Cardinals dug in down the stretch like they have done several times already this season. Paul Hams hit 7 of 8 free throws in the fourth quarter and the team as a whole connected on 17 of 25 from the line for one of their best effo rts to date this season. A huge momentum sw ing happened w hen a Sherman player was whistled for a technical following a two shot foul late in the fourth. Paul Hams hit three of four to put the Cardinals back in the front. The final score was 64-59 in favor of lone. lone had th ree players in double figures led by Alan Rietmann with 19. Paul Hams added 15 while freshm an M att H am s chipped in with 13. Both teams shot around 35% from the floor. The Cardinals were outrebounded 31-46 in the contest. Kip Krebs led lone’s effort with nine followed by Alan Rietmann and Kevin Fowler with six each. Paul Hams had an outstanding seven steals and five assists and A lan R ietm ann also had five assists. “We came back from a loss on F rid ay and I thought played very well,” said Coach Dennis Stefani. “ We hit big free throw s down the stretch and that was the difference." Coach Stefani was also pleased with the team play he witnessed. “I thought everyone played well as a team. That showed in only having 14 turnovers.” The Cardinals have tw o tough w eeks o f the regular season remaining. Farrens. the Heppner Mustang boys saw their lead evaporate as the Enterprise O utlaw s hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to take a 54-53 win in Blue Mountain Conference play on F rid ay , Jan. 26 in Heppner. The Mustangs, 5- 4 in the BMC and 9-8 overall, will be at league leading Union on Friday. Feb. 2; at hom e against sec o n d -p la c e W eston- McEwen on Saturday, Feb. 3; and at Irrigon on Tuesday, Feb. 6, in BMC play. The Outlaws took a 4-0 lead before Lane Bailey hit a long jumper. After an E nterprise three-pointer, Andre Rauch scored twice inside to cut the lead to 7-6. The Mustangs took an 11-8 lead when Farrens fed Tony Haguewood for a lay-in and Jared Huddleston hit a three- pointer. After six straight p o in ts by the O u tlaw s, Rauch scored off a rebound, but Enterprise took a 19-14 lead after one. The M ustangs would regain the lead to start the second quarter when Bailey scored off a steal, Nacho Elguezabal scored off a rebound and Rauch scored five points to make it 23-19. The Outlaws came back with eight straight points before Bailey hit a long jumper and Farrens hit a short jumper at the buzzer to tie it up at 27- 27 at the half. Rauch scored off a rebound and Matt McCabe hit two free throws as the Mustangs led. 41-36, after three. Enterprise hit a three-pointer to tie it at 49- 49 w ith :53.3 left. Elguezabal scored inside, but the Outlaws came back to tie it at 51-5I with :30 left to set up the final fran tic seconds. Rauch finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds, with Elguezabal scoring 11 points. Bailey finished with eight points, five steals and two assists. McCabe had six rebounds, six assists and four steals.
